The present disclosure is directed to systems and methods for permitting and restricting access to multimedia items based on temporal restrictions associated with certain subscription levels. The subscriptions may be subscriptions to broadcast/satellite television programming and/or Internet-streaming services. The temporal limitations on the subscription may be based on days of the week, time of day, and/or particular types of content that air at certain times. For example, one subscription type may be a weekend-only subscription that permits a user to access certain multimedia items on the weekend but restricts access to those same multimedia items during the week. A machine-learning model that is trained on a user's past viewing history is also disclosed. The system may rely on the machine-learning model to present certain relevant restricted multimedia items to the user that the user can access if the user, e.g., upgrades a subscription and/or remits a one-time fee.

Systems and methods are disclosed herein for enabling multiple users’ digital rights to be applied as needed to access media while those users are present to consume media. In particular, a media guidance application may receive a selection of a media asset and determine that the user equipment device does not allow access to the media asset. In response, the media guidance application may identify all the users consuming content from that user equipment device and retrieve digital rights for each user. The media guidance application may compare the digital rights of each user with digital rights required to access the media asset. The media guidance application may, based on the comparison, identify a set of digital rights (e.g., for another user present) that enable access to the media asset, and use those digital rights to access the media asset for consumption.

A method and a system relates to a cellular-network assisted Pay-Per-View (PPV). An issue arises in reconciling PPV purchase balance data when a Set-top Box (STB) lacks a communication link to the PPV headend server. The present disclosure addresses the issue by using a mobile computing device for delivering the PPV balance data from the STB to the PPV headend server over a cellular-network. The mobile computing device receives the PPV balance data from the Conditional Access Module (CAM) on STB through near-field communications. The mobile computing device, when it is moved to inside a service coverage area of a cellular or Wi-Fi-network, transmits the PPV balance data to the PPV headend server. The PPV headend server updates the PPV balance data and transmits the updated PPV balance data to the CAM on STB via the satellite broadcasting network.

When the user is determined by the set-top box to be authorized to activate playback of the media content, the set-top box determines a radio frequency channel of the coax network according to the first passkey received from the user and begins playback of the media content received on the radio frequency channel on a display device.

SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR DETERMINING THE LOCATION OF A USER DEVICE
Authenticating the location of a viewing device for receiving content includes storing a plurality of connection identifiers in a database, the connection identifiers being associated with a plurality of networking devices and a plurality of user accounts. A viewing device sends a request to access content which is received by a server. The request is associated with a user account. One or more first connection identifiers is selected from the database based on the user account to which the request is associated. A second connection identifier is obtained based on a connection between the viewing device and the server. It is determined if the second connection identifier matches one of the one or more first connection identifiers. Content is provided to the viewing device if the second connection identifier matches one of the one or more of the first connection identifiers.
