Distributed cable modem termination system with software reconfigurable MAC and PHY capability
09854283 · 2017-12-26 · ·

Distributed and highly software reconfigurable CMTS (CMRTS) device, based on MAC and PHY units with FPGA and DSP components, for a HFC CATV network. The various CATV RF modulators, such as QAM modulators, may be divided between QAM modulators located at the cable plant, and remote QAM modulators ideally located at the fiber nodes. A basic set of CATV QAM data waveforms may optionally be transmitted to the nodes using a first fiber, and a second set of IP/on-demand data may be transmitted to the nodes using an alternate fiber or alternate fiber frequency, and optionally using other protocols such as Ethernet protocols. The nodes will extract the data specific to each neighborhood and inject this data into unused QAM channels, thus achieving improved data transmission rates through finer granularity. A computerized “virtual shelf” control system for managing and reconfiguring the FPGA and DSP based CMTRS units is also disclosed.

At least one aspect is directed to managing policies to control network assets in real-time by dynamically enforcing policies based on a variety of detected conditions including service quality, subscriber usage, network performance, bandwidth, and events. The systems and methods described herein can enforce policy actions using the PacketCable Multimedia (PCMM) protocol, which is supported by Cable Modem Termination Systems (CMTS). The present solution can monitor IPDR usage data and SNMP network utilization data to determine conditions about the network and provide PCMM instructions to a CMTS to control network resources on an individual subscriber level. By providing PCMM instructions to a CMTS, the present solution can make service changes to individual modems without modifying the modem's configuration file, requiring a modem reboot, or the installation of additional hardware in the operator's network.

SYSTEM TO MONITOR AND MANAGE INTEGRATED RECEIVER DECODERS

An integrated network receiver includes a first universal resource identifier for a first channel and an input suitable for receiving a first input video content from the Internet based upon the first universal resource identifier. The integrated network receiver provides the first input video content for the first channel to a head end connected to a plurality of customer devices through a transmission network. The integrated network receiver updating the first universal resource identifier based upon data obtained from a video address server.

PREMISES APPARATUS AND METHODS FOR AGGREGATED HIGH-CAPACITY DATA SERVICES
20230198792 · 2023-06-22 ·

Premises apparatus and methods for providing aggregated high-bandwidth, low-latency, data service over a content delivery network including existing wireline infrastructure. In one embodiment, a network architecture having service delivery over at least portions of extant hybrid fiber coax (HFC) infrastructure is disclosed, which includes standards-compliant ultra-low latency and high data rate services (e.g., 3GPP and IEEE Std. 802.11 services) via a common service provider. In one variant, an expanded frequency band (e.g., 1.6 GHz in total bandwidth) is used over the coaxial portions of the HFC infrastructure, which is allocated to two or more sub-bands. Premises apparatus are used to support multi-service integration (e.g., aggregation of mobile wireless, premises, and other services), as well as incipient IoT applications and technologies.

METHODS AND APPARATUS FOR WIRELESS DEVICE ATTACHMENT IN A MANAGED NETWORK ARCHITECTURE
20230198793 · 2023-06-22 ·

Methods and apparatus for enhancing connectivity for a device backhauled by a wireline communication network. In one embodiment, the device comprises a small-cell or other wireless base station that is backhauled by a DOCSIS system within a managed HFC network, and the method and apparatus enable enhanced connection of user devices serviced by the base station (such as 3GPP UE or CBRS FWA) to a core entity for e.g., authentication and packet session establishment. In one implementation, enhanced Cable Termination System (CMTS) and cable modem (CM) devices coordinate to allocate prioritized service flows to traffic sourced from the base station. These service flows can selectively bypass extant DOCSIS protocols which might otherwise increase connection latency (including connection failure) such as AQM (active queue management) and packet dropping algorithms. In some variants, upstream service flow data rates can also be enhanced through temporary utilization of higher-order modulation and/or coding schemes.

SYNCHRONIZING UPSTREAM SIGNALS IN DISTRIBUTED CABLE SYSTEMS
20170359602 · 2017-12-14 ·

A distributed CATV system capable of removing jitter of upstream IP packets from distribution nodes over a packet distribution network is described. The headend of the CATV system has a jitter buffer that temporarily stores each upstream packet until a scheduled time that is computed to equalize the delays among the different distribution nodes. Each packet is associated with a timestamp, and the scheduled time to remove the packet from the jitter buffer is computed based on the packet's timestamp and the equalized delay. The distribution node that sends the packet upstream to the headened also inserts the timestamp into the packet.
