IONICALLY CONDUCTIVE THIN FILM COMPOSITE MEMBRANES FOR ENERGY STORAGE APPLICATIONS
An ionically conductive thin film composite (TFC) membrane is described. The low cost, high performance TFC membrane comprises a micropous support membrane, and a hydrophilic ionomeric polymer coating layer on a surface of the microporous support membrane. The hydrophilic ionomeric polymer coating layer is ionically conductive. The ionomeric polymer can also be present in the micropores of the support membrane. Methods of making the membrane and redox flow battery system incorporating the TFC membrane are also described.
COPOLYMERS WITH CATIONIC, NITROGEN-CONTAINING GROUPS AND ANION EXCHANGE MEMBRANES MADE THEREFROM
A crosslinkable copolymer is provided. The crosslinkable copolymer has pendant cationic nitrogen-containing groups with some, but not all, of these pendant groups further including a (meth)acryloyl group. The (meth)acryloyl groups can react to form a crosslinked copolymer that is ionically conductive. The crosslinked copolymer can be used to provide an anion exchange membrane that can be used in electrochemical cells such as fuel cells, electrolyzers, batteries, and electrodialysis cells.
Polymer-based electrolyte materials for proton exchange membrane fuel cells
Polymer-based electrolyte materials that may be used as proton exchange membranes in proton exchange membrane fuel cells are described. The disclosed polymer electrolyte materials can be generally defined by a general 1,3-dicarbonyl repeat unit that may include various side chain and main chain constituents changing the acidity of the C—H proton(s) located between the carbonyl groups. Accordingly, by varying such side-chain and main-chain constituents, the proton-conduction properties the disclosed proton exchange membranes can be manipulated, and methods of producing the same. Methods of producing such polymer electrolyte materials are also disclosed.
Method for producing a composite layer, electrochemical unit and use of the composite layer
A method is proposed by means of which a composite layer is producible in as simple and controlled a manner as possible, and by means of which composite layers with different predetermined properties can be produced with as little expenditure as possible, and thus economically. The method includes: providing a nanofiber material, comminuting the nanofiber material while forming nanorods, providing a liquid medium, which comprises an ionomer component and a dispersant, dispersing the nanorods in the liquid medium while forming a nanorod ionomer dispersion, and applying the nanorod ionomer dispersion to a surface region of a substrate while forming a composite layer. An electrochemical unit including the composite layer is provided. The composite layer is useful in a fuel cell (hydrogen fuel cell or direct alcohol fuel cell), in a redox flow cell, in an electrolytic cell, or in an ion exchanger, and useful for anion or proton conduction.
