Non-standard alternate protocol based satellite communications
One example includes a capability gateway that is comprised of a receiver and a transmitter. The receiver receives, from a ground station associated with a satellite system, a standard protocol associated with the ground station and a non-standard alternate protocol that includes alternate service layers inserted into an inter-layer boundary of standard radio layers, the alternate service layers providing end-to-end signaling between the capability gateway and a user equipment. The transmitter transmits the non-standard alternate protocol to the user equipment.
Wireless communication location reporting and paging
The disclosure relates in some aspects to location reporting and paging for satellite communication. In one aspect, the disclosure relates to a user terminal (UT) sending a message to report information about the UT's location. A threshold may be used to control whether (e.g., when) the UT reports its location. The location information may be used to enforce area (e.g., country) restrictions for the UT. In one aspect, the disclosure relates to forwarding paging messages between network access controllers. For example, a network access controller that is not able to page a UT may forward a paging message to another network access controller. In one aspect, the disclosure relates to a list of paging areas that indicates where a UT need not perform a paging area update.
Mobile Interactive Satellite Services
A mobile interactive satellite service includes a first satellite, a base station, and a ground station configured to provide respective and distinct first and second multicast content components to the first satellite and the base station. The first satellite communicates the first multicast content component in a first signal to a mobile device. The base station communicates the second multicast content component in a second signal to the mobile device, which can combine the received signals. For another embodiment, a mobile interactive service includes a mobile device, a first base station, a second base station, and a ground station configured to provide a first multicast content component to the first base station and a second multicast content component to the second base station. The first and second multicast content components are distinct, transmitted in respective first and second multicast signals and are combined by the mobile device.
ROUTING AN EMERGENCY CALL MADE THROUGH A NON-TERRESTRIAL NETWORK
Solutions for routing an emergency call made through a non-terrestrial network (NTN) include: receiving, by an NTN, from a user equipment (UE), an emergency call; not selecting, by the NTN, a public safety answering point (PSAP) for routing the emergency call; selecting, by the NTN, a packet data network (PDN) gateway (GW) in a terrestrial network (TN) to which to route the emergency call; and routing the emergency call to the selected PDN GW. Solutions also include: receiving, by the TN, from the NTN, the emergency call placed by the UE that is using the NTN; determining, by the TN, a location of the UE; selecting, by the TN, a PSAP using the location of the UE; and routing the emergency call to the selected PSAP.
Mobile interactive satellite services
A system for providing mobile interactive satellite services includes a satellite operable to communicate with mobile units, a terrestrial base transceiver station operable to communicate with mobile units, and a ground station in communication with the satellite and the terrestrial base transceiver station to provide mobile interactive satellite services. The mobile interactive satellite services include a multicast component and an interactive component such that the ground station provides both the multicast component and the interactive component using the satellite, with the terrestrial base transceiver station used to provide an ancillary terrestrial component. A device for communicating with a mobile interactive satellite service system includes an antenna, a transceiver coupled to the antenna and operable to communicate with a mobile interactive satellite service system, a user input device, an output device, a processor unit, and a network interface. The processor unit is coupled to the user input device, the output device, and the transceiver such that the processor is operable to output received information from the transceiver using the output device, to receive interactive information from the user input device, and to transmit data based on the received interactive information using the transceiver. The network interface is coupled to the processor such that the processor is operable to side load information.

Activating Satellite SOS Mode in Limited Service
Various embodiments include methods and wireless devices implementing such methods for detecting when the wireless device is operating in a limited service state (LSS) mode, transitioning from operating in LSS to satellite-based SOS mode in response to the wireless device operating in LSS mode, and sending a text message or initiating a voice call using the satellite-based SOS mode.

Systems and methods for space-based digital selective calling
Systems (100) and methods (400) for providing Digital Selective Calling (DSC) based services. The methods involve: using Space-Born Maritime (SBM) receivers of satellites (104) deployed in space as a satellite constellation to collect and process DSC emergency messages transmitted from DSC transmitters of terrestrial radios; using the satellites to position validate the DSC emergency messages; determining first positions of the DSC transmitters in transit based on geolocation data and time location data respectively assigned by the satellites to the DSC emergency messages; and validating the first positions to more precise second positions based on results of cross-correlations of the geolocation data and time location data with Automatic Identification Systems (AIS) data obtained for the DSC transmitters.
