An ultrasound treatment appliance comprising a surgical handpiece, an ultrasound insert, and an ultrasound generator, the handpiece including a piezoelectric transducer connected to the ultrasound insert and a piezoelectric motor connected to the ultrasound generator. The piezoelectric motor transmits ultrasound waves to the insert, which waves are defined as a function of current and voltage setpoint signals delivered by the ultrasound generator to the piezoelectric motor. The appliance also includes a module for controlling the amplitudes of the setpoint signals and configured to increase or decrease the amplitudes of the current and voltage setpoint signals when the variation in the impedance of the ultrasound signal is greater than a predetermined impedance variation value and when the variation in the frequency of the ultrasound signal is greater than or less than the predetermined frequency variation value.

Pop-Up Laminate Structures with Integrated Electronics

A multi-layer, super-planar laminate structure can be formed from distinctly patterned layers. The layers in the structure can include at least one rigid layer and at least one flexible layer; the rigid layer includes a plurality of rigid segments, and the flexible layer can extend between the rigid segments to serve as a joint. The layers are then stacked and bonded at selected locations to form a laminate structure with inter-layer bonds, and the laminate structure is flexed at the flexible layer between rigid segments to produce an expanded three-dimensional structure, wherein the layers are joined at the selected bonding locations and separated at other locations. A layer with electrical wiring can be included in the structure for delivering electric current to devices on or in the laminate structure.

Semiconductor tweezers and instrumentation for tissue detection and characterization

Devices, systems, and techniques are disclosed for intelligent semiconductor based medical tweezers and instrumentation including microscale sensors, actuators and circuitry for tissue detection and characterization. In one aspect, a tweezer device includes a hinge structure to enable tweezing motion of the device for clamping a sample, two leg components coupled to the hinge structure, a plurality of microprobes configured on both of the two leg components, and an electronic circuit electrically coupled to the microprobes to process and/or transmit the electronic signals. The microprobes include sensors in a sensing tip structured to penetrate into the sample when the device clamps the sample and produce electronic signals from the sensors of a property of the sample, the sensors of the sensing tip including at least one of an electrode to measure an electrical potential, an electrical permittivity sensor to measure electrical permittivity, or a strain gauge to measure mechanical compliance.

METHOD OF USING REINFORCED FLEXIBLE CIRCUITS WITH MULTIPLE SENSORS TO OPTIMIZE PERFORMANCE OF RADIO FREQUENCY DEVICES

A method implemented by a surgical instrument is disclosed. The surgical instrument includes first and second jaws and a flexible circuit including multiple sensors to optimize performance of a radio frequency (RF) device. The flexible circuit includes at least one therapeutic electrode couplable to a source of RF energy, at least two sensing electrodes, and at least one insulative layer. The insulative layer is positioned between the at least one therapeutic electrode and the at least two sensing electrodes. The method includes contacting tissue positioned between the first and second jaws of the surgical instrument with the at least one therapeutic electrode and at the least two sensing electrodes; sensing signals from the at least two sensing electrodes; and controlling RF energy delivered to the at least one therapeutic electrode based on the sensed signals.

A first borehole is defined through the ultrasonic transducer and an end mass having a second borehole defined therethrough. A surface of the end mass is positioned adjacent a first end of the ultrasonic transducer, the end mass is configured to engage with the housing, and the conduit section of the housing is configured to pass through the second borehole of the end mass. The end mass is configured to compress the ultrasonic transducer against a surface of the housing when the end mass is engaged with the housing.

The method includes determining, by a control circuit of the surgical stapling instrument, a first stroke length for a first staple driver of the surgical stapling instrument to drive a first row of staples of a circular stapling head assembly of the surgical stapling instrument; detecting, by the control circuit, a malformed staple in the first row of staples; adjusting, by the control circuit, the staple parameter, based on the detection of the malformed staple; and determining, by the control circuit, a second stroke length for a second staple driver of the surgical stapling instrument to drive a second row of staples of the circular stapling head assembly.

A system may include at least one processor configured to implement a method including receiving an identifier of a patient, an identifier of a healthcare provider, and surgical footage of a surgical procedure performed on the patient. The method may include analyzing frames of the surgical footage to identify phases of the surgical procedure based on interactions between medical instruments and biological structures and, based on the interactions, associate a name with each phase. The method may include determining a beginning of each phase and associating a time marker with the beginning of each phase. The method may include populating a post-operative report with the patient identifier, the names of the phases, and time markers associated with the phases in a manner that enables the health care provider to alter the post-operative report.
