Disclosed embodiments include apparatuses, systems, and methods for driving a needle to facilitate suturing, such as may be performed in a surgical anastomosis procedure. In an illustrative embodiment, an apparatus includes a frame configured to counter-rotatably support two generally parallel rollers. A first roller supported by the frame has a flat surface configured to rollably engage a first face of a shaft of a helically-shaped needle. A second roller supported by the frame has a grooved surface defining a groove that is configured to at least partially receive a second face of the shaft. The bottom of the groove has a bottom width at least as wide as the second face and bounded by sides extending to a groove opening at the grooved surface having a surface width that is wider than the second face.

An implant manipulator may have a distal end that retains an implant, a proximal end, and an intermediate portion between the ends. The implant manipulator may be a needle for a suture passer, with a suture capture feature at the distal end. The suture capture feature may have first and second members that flex apart to permit entry of the suture into a suture capture hole wherein the suture is retained until released. A suture passer may include one or more needles. The suture passer may also include a pusher; a distal end with a sharp, blade-like extension; or a side-loading distal end.

MEDICAL SUTURE NEEDLE

A medical suture needle made of stainless steel includes a cutting blade component and a body part continuing to the cutting blade component. The cutting blade component, whose degree of thickness decreases from the body part to a sharp point, includes a first cutting blade part and a second cutting blade part continuing from the first cutting blade part. The first cutting blade part includes two first slanted surfaces formed sandwiching an apex and a first bottom surface sandwiched by the two first slanted surfaces. Cutting blades are formed at an edge constituting the apex and at edges where the first bottom surface and the two first slanted surfaces intersect. The second cutting blade part includes first slanted surfaces, second slanted surfaces having rims approximately parallel to the apex and formed on the respective first slanted surfaces, and a second bottom surface sandwiched by the second slanted surfaces.

APPARATUSES, SYSTEMS, AND METHODS FOR FASCIAL CLOSURE

A biocompatible device for fascial closing following surgeries and a corresponding hand-held tensioning mechanism. The device is modeled after a zip tie and consists of a needle, body, and locking mechanism. The needle and body are driven through fascia, then the needle is separated to allow for the feeding of the body through the locking mechanism to provide tension against fascia separation. The body of the tie comprises a first face with a series of recessed teeth and a second face with a substantially smooth surface. When the tie forms a loop in a locked configuration, the first face of the body is oriented toward an internal volume of the loop and in direct contact with a target, whereas the second face of the body is oriented towards surrounding tissues that minimizes trauma to surrounding tissues.

Instrument for delivering a surgical thread

To reduce the risk of damaging organs in a body while delivering a thread during surgery, an instrument for delivering a surgical thread has a grip, an outer cylinder fixed the grip, a hollow needle extending inside the outer cylinder and being configured to be moved relative to the outer cylinder in an axial direction and a loop configured to be housed in the outer cylinder. An end of the outer cylinder is bent in a state where force is not applied. The hollow needle is exposed from the outer cylinder when puncturing skin or etc., and the hollow needle is housed in the outer cylinder when it travels near organs which should not be damaged.

METHODS OF SURGICAL FASTENING

An apparatus and a method for surgical fastening is disclosed. An illustrative apparatus for tissue suturing includes a cartridge having a suturing needle having a pointed end and a blunt end, the suturing needle capable of rotating about an axis, a reciprocating needle drive, and an actuator capable of releasably engaging the needle drive to rotate the needle. A method for suturing tissue is provided that includes placing a suturing device having a cartridge containing a suturing needle to span at least one tissue segment, activating an actuator to cause rotational movement of the suturing needle through the at least one tissue segment, and deactivating the actuator to stop an advancing movement of the suturing needle to cause a suturing material to be pulled through the at least one tissue segment forming a stitch.

NEEDLE CARTRIDGE WITH MOVEABLE COVER

A needle cartridge is adapted to be attached to a receiver on a surgical suturing device. The cartridge comprises an arced needle having a leading end, a trailing end, and a length of suture. A cartridge body has a track that receives the needle and defining a circular path. A needle driver is operable to rotate the needle along the circular path. A cover is on the body and positioned over the needle in the track. The cover is selectively moveable relative to the body to release the needle from the track.

In one form, a surgical needle has a curved needle body having a first end and a second end and defines an interior region between the first and second ends. The interior region contains a center of curvature of the needle body. The first and second ends each terminate in a point. The needle body has an intermediate portion between the first and second ends, and defines an internal surface facing the interior region and an external surface facing away from the interior region. A recess is thrilled within the external surface of the needle body. In another form, the needle is provided in a sterilized package together with one or more elongate filaments each having a proximal end coupled to the needle body within the recess. A container holds the surgical needle and the filament.
