An image display method includes according to image information of a current image frame to be displayed, adjusting the brightness of a first light source (11) having a first light field, and steering light of a second light source (12) to form a second light field, so as to enable the first light field provided by the second light source (11) and the second light field provided by the second light source (12) to work in concert to satisfy displaying of display partitions of the image frame to be displayed. The image display method implements high-dynamic range display of images, and facilitates improvement of dark field detail expression of images to be displayed. Also provided are an image display apparatus and a projection device.

Beam combining for highlight projection

A novel projection system includes first and second light sources (e.g., sets of lasers), a spatial light modulator (SLM) that receives light from the first light source, and a beam steering device that receives light from the second light source and steers the light to highlight regions of the SLM. The SLM then modulates the light from both light sources to generate a highlighted imaging beam which can then be projected on a viewing surface. The highlighted imaging beam can represent a highlighted 2D image or a highlighted left- or right-eye view of a 3D image. The projection system thus improves peak brightness in the displayed highlighted images without incorporating a separate highlight projector or other expensive equipment. Methods for highlighting projected images are also described.

Multiple stage modulation projector display systems having efficient light utilization

Dual or multi-modulation display systems comprising a first modulator and a second modulator are disclosed. The first modulator may comprise a plurality of analog mirrors (e.g. MEMS array) and the second modulator may comprise a plurality of mirrors (e.g., DMD array). The display system may further comprise a controller that sends control signals to the first and second modulator. The display system may render highlight features within a projected image by affecting a time multiplexing scheme. In one embodiment, the first modulator may be switched on a sub-frame basis such that a desired proportion of the available light may be focused or directed onto the second modulator to form the highlight feature on a sub-frame rendering basis.

A relay optical system exhibits an action of deflecting light with respect to passing luminous flux as a result of being provided with a light deflection member, and thus a cross-section of the luminous flux can be adjusted to a state of having an appropriate size (enlarged size), that is, a state in which an image is not completely formed but is blurred, at image formation positions of color modulation light valves. Therefore, it is possible to form a favorable image by minimizing moire.

Projection system with additional series connected light valve for enhanced contrast

A projection system is provided that uses an additional light valve in series with at least one color sub-assembly and respective light valve in order to increase the contrast of a projected image, wherein bit sequences are generated for the additional light valve that do not result in interference with the respective light valve bit sequences.

Digital Point Spread Function (DPSF) and Dual Modulation Projection (including Lasers) using DPSF

A digital PSF for use in a dual modulation display. The invention allows the use of less than optimal point spread (PSF) functions in the optics between the pre-modulator and primary modulator of a dual modulation projection system. This technique uses multiple halftones per frame in the pre-modulator synchronized with a modified bit sequence in the primary modulator to produce a compensation image that reduces the errors produced by the sub-optimal PSF. The invention includes the application to dual modulation and dual modulated 3D viewing systems.

APERTURE SHARING FOR HIGHLIGHT PROJECTION

A novel projection system includes a base signal source, a highlight signal source, a base/highlight destination, and a shared optical element. A base signal provided by the base source and a highlight signal provided by the highlight source are combined by the shared optical element. In a particular embodiment, the base signal source and the highlight signal source each include a light source, a spatial light modulator, and optics, and the base/highlight destination includes optics and a spatial light modulator. In a more particular embodiment, the base signal source and the highlight source provide spatially modulated lightfields to the shared optical element. In another particular embodiment, the base signal and the highlight signal are modulated by the spatial light modulator of the base/highlight destination after being combined.

Display Systems, Projection Units and Methods for Presenting Three-Dimensional Images

A display system for presenting three-dimensional images. The display system includes projection unit including projection subassemblies, wherein each projection subassembly includes array of point-like light sources, spatial light modulator and controller; projection screen; and processor. The processor is configured to: process three-dimensional data pertaining to a scene to generate image data of three-dimensional image; and display three-dimensional image, via projection subassemblies of the projection unit, wherein, in each of projection subassemblies, the controller is configured to multiplex operations of individual point-like light sources of the array and the spatial light modulator in a time-sequential manner, based on the image data of three-dimensional image, to display a plurality of segments of three-dimensional image sequentially.
