A surgical instrument for treating the tissue of a patient is disclosed. The surgical instrument comprises a handle, a shaft extending from the handle, and an end effector. The surgical instrument further comprises a motorized drive system, a first drive system configured to perform a first end effector drive motion, wherein the first drive system is operably coupled to the motorized drive system, and a second drive system configured to perform a second end effector drive motion, wherein the second drive system is operably coupled to the motorized drive system. The surgical instrument further comprises synchronizing means for repetitively sequencing the first end effector drive motion and the second end effector drive motion.

The surgical instrument can further comprise a transmission comprising a first operating configuration which connects the motor to the closure drive and a second operating configuration which connects the motor to the firing drive.

The stapling instrument comprises a first jaw, a second jaw movable relative to the first jaw, a firing member configured to push a sled to deploy staples, and a lockout configured to prevent the firing member from advancing distally when the staple cartridge is not properly seated within the stapling instrument and when the sled of the staple cartridge is not in an unfired position, wherein a lockout key of the staple cartridge defeats a first stage of the lockout when the staple cartridge is fully seated in the stapling instrument, and wherein the sled defeats a second stage of the lockout when the sled is in the unfired position and the staple cartridge is fully seated in the stapling instrument.

The staple cartridge comprises an elongate slot extending from a proximal end toward a distal end, wherein the elongate slot defines a longitudinal axis, a cartridge body, and a deck surface. The staple cartridge further comprises a first longitudinal row of staple cavities defined in the cartridge body, wherein the first longitudinal row of staple cavities extends alongside the elongate slot. First cavity extenders protrude above said deck surface, wherein each first cavity extender surrounds a first section of a staple cavity from the first longitudinal row. The staple cartridge further comprises a second longitudinal row extending alongside the first longitudinal row of staple cavities. Second cavity extenders protrude above the deck surface, wherein each second protrusion surrounds a second section of a staple cavity from the second longitudinal row. The second section is different than the first section.

The backing member is coupled with the anvil and the concave surface defines a gap between the backing member and an adjacent component of the apparatus. The anvil is configured to deflect in a direction towards the gap in response to actuation of the apparatus to at least one of clamp tissue or staple tissue.
