Surgical stapling system including a firing beam extending through an articulation region

A surgical stapling system comprising an end effector, a firing member, a firing beam, a motor configured to drive the firing beam, an elongate shaft, and an articulation region is disclosed. The end effector comprises a first jaw, a second jaw, and a staple cartridge comprising staples. The firing member is movable from a proximal position toward a distal position during a firing stroke. The staples are deployable from the staple cartridge based on the firing member moving toward the distal position during the firing stroke. The firing beam extends proximally from the firing member and is configured to drive the firing member between the proximal position and the distal position. The firing beam extends through the articulation region. The end effector is rotatable relative to the elongate shaft about the articulation region about an articulation axis.

Surgical fastener applying apparatus

The present disclosure relates to a surgical fastener applying apparatus for applying fasteners to body tissue. The apparatus includes a cartridge receiving half-section defining an elongated channel member configured to releasably receive a firing assembly and a single use loading unit. A lockout structure prevents insertion of the single use loading unit into the channel member after the firing assembly is mounted to the cartridge receiving half-section. Alternatively, the lockout structure prevents full insertion of the firing assembly into the cartridge receiving half-section, if the single use loading unit is not engaged with the firing assembly.

A loading unit including double pushers and double retention cavities is disclosed. At least one double pusher includes a first body portion having a first upper surface configured to engage a portion of a first fastener, a second body portion having a second upper surface configured to engage a portion of a second fastener, and a bridge interconnecting the first body portion and the second body portion. Each of the first upper surface and the second upper surface defining an acute angle with respect to a longitudinal axis. At least one double retention cavity includes a first retention guiding surface configured to engage a proximal pusher guiding surface of the first body portion of the double pusher retained therein, and a second retention guiding surface configured to engage a distal pusher guiding surface of the first body portion of the double pusher retained therein.

Surgical instruments, such as clamping and cutting instruments, are provided. In one aspect, a surgical stapling instrument comprises first and second jaws and a drive member configured to move in a distal direction through at least one of the jaws. The instrument further includes a locking member movable between a first position permitting distal translation of the drive member, and a second position impeding distal translation of the drive member, and a switch movable from a proximal position to a distal position. When the switch is in the proximal position, it releasably maintains the locking member in the first position, and when the switch is in the distal position, it allows the locking member to move to the second position. This inhibits or prevents actuation of a knife when there is a spent or previously fired cartridge loaded in the instrument.

Articulatable surgical stapling instruments

A surgical instrument that includes a shaft assembly that defines a shaft axis and includes a proximal articulation joint that defines a first articulation axis that is transverse to the shaft axis and a distal articulation joint that defines a second articulation axis that is transverse to the shaft axis and the first articulation axis. The instrument further includes an anvil that is non-removably attached to the shaft assembly and a channel that is removably attachable to the shaft assembly and configured to operably support a surgical staple cartridge.

A surgical instrument comprising a handle, an elongate shaft, an end effector, an articulation joint, an articulation knob, an articulation member, and an articulation lock is disclosed. The end effector is rotatably coupled to the elongate shaft by the articulation joint. The articulation knob is rotatable between an un-rotated position and rotated positions. The articulation lock comprises a lock member configured to move between a locked position where the lock member is engaged with a detent of the end effector and an unlocked position where the lock member is disengaged from the end effector. The lock member is movable between the locked position and the unlocked position by the articulation knob. The articulation member is moved from a proximal position toward a distal position to articulate the end effector when the articulation knob is moved from the un-rotated position toward a rotated position.

Surgical instrument and linear stapler

A surgical instrument and a linear surgical stapler are provided. The instrument includes: a suturing mechanism including an anvil assembly and a mounting part for mounting a staple cartridge assembly, in which the staple cartridge assembly includes a staple cartridge for accommodating staples, and the anvil assembly includes an anvil matched with the staple cartridge; a staple pushing assembly, configured to push the staples so that the staples are sequentially fired; a transmission assembly, configured for driving the staple cartridge assembly to move relative to the anvil assembly and driving the staple pushing assembly to move to push the staples; and a drive assembly, connected to the transmission assembly and configured for driving the transmission assembly to move.

Surgical stapler cartridge retainer with ejector feature

An apparatus includes an elongate body, at least one latch member, and a cartridge removal feature. The elongate body is sized and shaped to correspond with a deck of a surgical staple cartridge such that the elongate body is configured to cover a plurality of staple apertures of the surgical staple cartridge. The at least one latch member is configured to removably secure the elongate body to the surgical staple cartridge. The cartridge removal feature is integral with the elongate body. The cartridge removal feature defines a gap that is configured to receive a portion of the surgical staple cartridge. The cartridge removal feature is further operable to remove the surgical staple cartridge from a surgical stapler.
