A surgical instrument includes an end effector assembly including first and second grasping components each defining a tissue-contacting portion. One or both of the grasping components is movable relative to the other to a closed position wherein the tissue-contacting portions cooperate to define a grasping area therebetween. One or both of the grasping components is configured to apply energy from the tissue-contacting portion thereof to tissue disposed within the grasping area to treat tissue. The tissue-contacting portion of the first grasping component defines a first opening disposed within the grasping area and in communication with a first lumen defined at least partially through the first grasping component. The first lumen is adapted to connect to a source of vacuum to enable aspiration through the first opening.

SURGICAL INSTRUMENTS, SYSTEMS, AND METHODS FOR FREQUENCY DITHERING CONTROL FUNCTIONALITY

An ultrasonic surgical system includes an ultrasonic generator configured to provide an ultrasonic drive signal, and an ultrasonic transducer electrically coupled to the ultrasonic generator to receive the ultrasonic drive signal therefrom and configured, in response to the received ultrasonic drive signal, to produce a mechanical motion. The ultrasonic surgical system further includes a sensor configured to sense a frequency and a magnitude of the mechanical motion, and a controller configured to receive a target mechanical motion to be produced by the ultrasonic transducer and control the ultrasonic drive signal so that a frequency of the ultrasonic drive signal falls within a frequency range around a resonant frequency of the ultrasonic transducer, the frequency range corresponding to the target mechanical motion produced by the ultrasonic transducer.

Adaptatively morphing surgical grasper

A grasper device for mini-invasive surgery procedures is provided, having two jaws, each of which having two elastically-deformable elements fixed one another and developing according to a main longitudinal direction, in particular a front element which contacts the tissue to be grasped and a back support element receiving a grasping force from a proximal command and having a higher modulus of elasticity than the front element. During the application of a grasping force F.sub.z, the two elements deform along a transverse direction that is orthogonal to the main longitudinal direction and to the grasping force F.sub.z.

SYSTEMS, DEVICES AND METHODS OF REPAIRING TENDONS AND LIGAMENTS

A repaired tendon includes a proximal tendon section having a free end, and a distal tendon section having a free end that opposes the free end of the proximal tendon section. Four bidirectional barbed sutures are implanted in the repaired tendon for approximating the free end of the proximal tendon section with the free end of the distal tendon section. Each of the four bidirectional barbed sutures includes a proximal section having proximal barbs that engage the proximal tendon section, a distal section having distal barbs that engage the distal tendon section, and a stop located between the proximal and distal barbs that engages the approximated free ends of the proximal and distal tendon sections. The bidirectional barbed sutures have first suture bites and second suture bites that are shorter than the first suture bites.

Ultrasonic surgical instrument clamp arm with snap-on clamp pad

An apparatus for operating on tissue includes a body, a shaft assembly, and an end effector. The shaft assembly extends distally from the body and includes an acoustic waveguide. The waveguide is configured to acoustically couple with an ultrasonic transducer. The end effector includes an ultrasonic blade, a clamp arm, and a clamp pad. The blade is in acoustic communication with the waveguide. The clamp arm is configured to pivot about a first pivot point toward and away from the ultrasonic blade and includes a coupling feature. The clamp pad is selectively attachable to the blade to acoustically isolate the clamp arm from the ultrasonic blade. The coupling feature of the clamp arm is configured to provide a snap fit between the clamp pad and the clamp arm and thereby permit manipulation of the clamp pad for removal of the clamp pad from the clamp arm.
