20220142701 · 2022-05-12 ·

A surgical device includes a housing, an elongated shaft, an end effector, and an actuation mechanism. The housing pivotally supports a movable handle between unactuated, first actuated, and a second actuated positions. The elongated shaft extends distally from the housing and defines a longitudinal axis. The end effector has a pair of opposed jaw members that are movable between an open configuration in which the jaw members are spaced apart from one another and a closed configuration in which the jaw members are closer together. The actuation mechanism is configured to transition the end effector between the open and closed configurations as the movable handle is pivoted between the unactuated and first actuated positions and to maintain the end effector in the closed configuration when the moveable handle is between the first and second actuated positions.

Surgical instruments and methods for performing tonsillectomy, adenoidectomy, and other surgical procedures

A surgical instrument includes a housing, a shaft extending therefrom, an end effector assembly supported by the shaft, a movable handle, and a drive assembly. The drive assembly includes a translatable drive member for actuating the end effector assembly, and a torsion spring including first and second legs. The first leg is configured to translate through the housing in response to movement of the movable handle relative to the housing. The second leg is configured to translate through the housing in cooperation with the first leg to move the drive member longitudinally when a force acting on the drive member is less than a threshold force, and to remain in fixed position, thereby tensioning the torsion spring and retaining the drive member in fixed position when the force acting on the drive member is equal to or exceeds the threshold force.

TUNNELING AND INSERTION TOOL FOR IMPLANTABLE MEDICAL DEVICE

A tool includes a handle, a plunger actuator proximate the handle, a shaft extending from the handle, a plunger, an engagement mechanism. The shaft includes a proximal end and a distal end, and the shaft defines a channel extending along a length of the shaft. A first actuation of the plunger actuator causes the plunger to translate along the length of the shaft in a distal direction. A second actuation of the plunger actuator causes the plunger to translate along the length of the shaft in a proximal direction. The engagement mechanism is disposed on the distal end and is configured to engage an implantable medical device, and release the implantable medical device in response to the plunger exerting a contact force on the implantable medical device exceeding a reaction force of the engagement mechanism when the plunger translates along the length of the shaft in the distal direction.

Microsurgical tool for robotic applications

The disclosed technology includes improved microsurgical tools providing multiple degrees of freedom at the wrist level, including roll, pitch, and grasp DOFs, a tight articulation bending radius, low radial offset, and improved stiffness. Some implementations include an end effector platform moveable along a fixed trajectory on a fictional axle so as not to interfere with a central-axis aligned working channel; a crossed-arm mechanical linkage for articulating an end-effector platform throughout a pitch DOF with an amplified pitch angle; and a partial pulley system to articulate the arms while maximizing pulley radius to shaft diameter, and permitting a constant transmission efficiency to the arms throughout the range of articulation. In some implementations, a tool shaft outer diameter may be smaller than 3 mm; a pitch DOF range may be ±90°, a roll DOF range may be ±180°, and a grasp DOF range may be 30°.

Surgical device having multiple drivers

A surgical device is provided, the surgical device including a first driver for performing a first movement function; a second driver for performing a second movement function; a first rotatable drive shaft configured, upon actuation, to cause selective engagement of one of the first and second drivers with a second rotatable drive shaft, wherein the second rotatable drive shaft is configured to drive the selectively engaged one of the first and second drivers. Third and fourth drivers may also be included. The drivers may function to rotate a shaft portion of the surgical device relative to, and about the longitudinal axis of, a handle; move a jaw portion relative to the shaft portion; move a first jaw relative to a second jaw; and/or move a surgical member within the second jaw.

A gearbox assembly and surgical instrument including the same. The gearbox assembly includes a drive gear including a round gear and a lead screw such that a rotational input to the round gear rotates the lead screw. A first hub is threadingly engaged about the lead screw such that rotation of the lead screw translates the first hub. A second hub is spaced-apart from the first hub and engaged with a drive rod. A compression spring is disposed between the hubs. When a force acting against the drive rod is below a threshold, the rotational input translates the first hub, compression spring, second hub, and drive rod. When the force is equal to or above the threshold, the rotational input translates the first hub and compresses the compression spring against the second hub to maintain the second hub and drive rod in position.

Surgical instrument comprising a display

A surgical instrument system is disclosed which comprises a distal end and a staple cartridge assembly comprising staples removably stored therein. The instrument system further comprises a firing drive including an electric motor and a firing member operably couplable with the electric motor. The electric motor is operable to advance the firing member toward the distal end during a staple firing stroke to eject the staples from the staple cartridge. The electric motor is operable to retract the firing member away from the distal end during a retraction stroke. The surgical instrument system further comprises a manually-operated bailout mechanism operable to perform the retraction stroke in lieu of the electric motor, a controller, and a display in communication with the controller. The controller is configured to display the progress of the retraction stroke when the firing member is being manually retracted by the bailout mechanism.
