At a boundary position between the first vibration transmitting member and the second vibration transmitting member, the first vibration transmitting member has a boundary face including a contacting area that is in contact with the second vibration transmitting member at the face, and a non-contacting area that is not in contact with the second vibration transmitting member.
MINIMALLY INVASIVE GLAUCOMA SURGICAL INSTRUMENT AND METHOD
Apparatuses and methods for the treatment of glaucoma are provided. The instrument uses either cauterization, a laser to ablate, sonic or ultrasonic energy to emulsify, or mechanical cutting of a portion of the trabecular meshwork. The instrument may also be provided with irrigation, aspiration, and a footplate. The footplate is used to enter Schlemm's canal, serves as a guide, and also protects Schlemm's canal.
Integrated piezoelectric-driven vibrating beams applicable to hand-held surgical devices
A piezo-driven, vibrating beam is applicable to surgical procedures. A rod of piezoelectric material defines a length with proximal and distal ends. A pattern of electrodes, disposed adjacent to and along the length of the rod of piezoelectric material, is adapted for connection to a generator operative to stimulate the piezoelectric material, causing the rod to assume one or more vibratory states. In preferred embodiments, the proximal end of the rod of piezoelectric material is adapted for coupling to a blocking mass causing the vibratory states to be concentrated at the distal end of the rod of piezoelectric material. The pattern of electrodes may comprise interdigitated fingers, and the system may further include a material encapsulating the rod and the pattern of electrodes. Preferred embodiments may further include a plurality of coextensive, parallel rods forming a basic unit, each rod having a separate pattern of electrodes adjacent thereto.
Modular battery powered handheld surgical instrument with voltage sag resistant battery pack
A system including a battery assembly for use in a modular handheld surgical instrument, wherein the battery assembly includes a primary battery pack, a secondary battery pack, and a circuit configured to supply a first output voltage to a first load of the modular handheld surgical instrument via the primary battery pack, supply a second output voltage to a second load of the modular handheld surgical instrument via the secondary battery pack, and upon sensing a sagging voltage from the primary battery pack, supply a supplemental voltage to the first load, via the secondary battery pack, to prevent the battery assembly from supplying an output voltage below a predetermined threshold output voltage under the first load.
ULTRASONIC TRANSMITTER UNIT
An ultrasonic transmitter unit includes: a sheath that forms a cylindrical shape and is having a proximal end and a distal end; an ultrasonic transmitter configured to be inserted into the sheath; and a cover member that covers a part of the ultrasonic transmitter and has an inner surface and an outer surface. The ultrasonic transmitter includes: a first area surrounded by the sheath; a second area protruding from the distal end of the sheath; and a distal-end treatment portion provided in a distal end of the second area. The cover member covers the second area of the ultrasonic transmitter, and exposes the distal-end treatment portion of the ultrasonic transmitter to an outside, and is made of fluorine-based resin.
Control System For An Ultrasonic Surgical Handpiece
A control system for an ultrasonic surgical device has a console operatively connected to a power source and configured for detachable connection to the ultrasonic surgical device. A control circuit of the console is configured to regulate an operating signal to correspond to the operating characteristics of the ultrasonic surgical handpiece in response to a loading signal. An operator input of the console operatively connects to the control circuit to provide a control signal.
Coupling arrangements and methods for attaching tools to ultrasonic surgical instruments
An ultrasonic surgical instrument is disclosed including an ultrasonic transducer, an ultrasonic end effector comprising a proximal end formed of a first material having a first coefficient of thermal expansion, and a waveguide configured to transmit ultrasonic energy generated by the ultrasonic transducer to the ultrasonic end effector. The waveguide includes an attachment portion formed of a second material having a second coefficient of thermal expansion that is greater than the first coefficient of thermal expansion. The attachment portion is configured to be selectively expandable into an acoustically coupled retaining engagement with the ultrasonic end effector by expanding faster than the proximal end of the ultrasonic end effector when heat is applied to establish an interference fit therebetween.
Modular battery powered handheld surgical instrument with energy conservation techniques
A method of conserving energy in a surgical instrument that includes a segmented circuit having a plurality of independently operated circuit segments, a voltage control circuit, an energy source, a memory, and a processor coupled to the memory. The processor is configured to control a state of a circuit segment of the plurality of circuit segments. The state can be an energized state or a deenergized state. The method includes transmitting an energizing signal from the processor to a voltage control circuit, receiving the energizing signal by the voltage control circuit to apply a voltage to a circuit segment of the plurality of circuit segments, applying the voltage to the circuit segment by the voltage control circuit to cause the circuit segment to transition from the deenergized state to the energized state in accordance with an energization sequence that is different from a deenergization sequence.
ULTRASONIC TREATMENT TOOL
The disclosed technology is directed to a probe unit of an ultrasonic treatment tool that comprises an ultrasonic probe having respective opposed distal and proximal end sides in a longitudinal direction and configured to transmit ultrasonic vibrations. A treatment portion is attached to the distal end side of the ultrasonic probe in the longitudinal direction. The treatment portion includes a cutting surface of a shape having directionality. A handle portion having a cutting portion identifier that is engaged with an outer circumference of the proximal end side of the ultrasonic probe. The cutting portion identifier is configured to indicate a position of a reference side representing a direction in which the cutting surface is oriented and/or included in the cutting surface.
