CATARACT EXTRACTION METHOD AND INSTRUMENTATION

A tip for a phacoemulsification handpiece, including a tubular structure having an elongate portion with generally parallel sides and a flared end portion extending outwardly from the elongate portion and presenting a mouth that is larger in diameter than a lumen diameter of the elongate portion. The tip may include a plurality of internally extending structures coupled to an interior of the tubular structure. A method of surgically removing a crystalline lens of an eye, including evaluating the crystalline lens to determine the level of nuclear sclerosis, sectioning at least a central portion of the crystalline lens into a plurality of lens fragments by application of femtosecond laser energy and aspirating the lens fragments from the eye using a phaco-aspiration tip coupled to a source of suction. The method may include application of pulsed vacuum to aspirate lens fragments.

FEATURES TO PROMOTE REMOVAL OF DEBRIS FROM WITHIN ULTRASONIC SURGICAL INSTRUMENT

An instrument includes an ultrasonic blade, a first fluid port, an irrigation member, a second fluid port, and a fluid communication assembly. The ultrasonic blade defines a distal opening. The ultrasonic blade is operable in a first mode to emulsify tissue that is distally positioned relative to the ultrasonic blade. The ultrasonic blade is further operable in a second mode to transect and seal tissue that is transversely positioned relative to the ultrasonic blade. The first fluid port is in communication with the distal opening of the ultrasonic blade. The irrigation member is positioned adjacent to the distal end of the ultrasonic blade. The second fluid port is in communication with the irrigation member. The fluid communication assembly is configured to couple the first fluid port with a fluid source, couple the first fluid port with a suction source, and couple the second fluid port with the fluid source.

A method of manufacturing an ultrasound probe includes: forming a probe body; forming a coating portion by applying a liquid containing a resin component as a main component and a filler to a predetermined region on an outer surface of the probe body and heating the liquid; and forming a mold portion by placing the probe body on which the coating portion is formed in a die and pouring a resin containing a same component as the resin component serving as the main component of the coating portion in the die.

Systems and methods for ball probe ultrasonic foraminotomy
12059168 · 2024-08-13 ·

The present invention discloses a ball probe ultrasonic bone removal device that is designed to assist surgeons with foraminotomy procedures. The device comprises a shaft at a first end of the device and a spherical ball tip at a second end of the device. In between the shaft and the ball tip is a foot piece that connects to the shaft through an angle. On the foot piece, serrations or a coarse surface cover a portion of the circumference of the foot piece. In some embodiments, serrations or a coarse surface may also cover a portion of the circumference of the shaft. The spherical ball tip is smooth and designed to cause no damage to the sensitive nerves and tissue in the intervertebral foramina, but the surface with the serrations or the coarse protrusions are designed to remove bone and tissue under ultrasonic movement (e.g., vertical vibration, rotational oscillation).
