Needle tip for surgical instrument
09867736 · 2018-01-16 ·

A needle 10 for a surgical instrument for removal of diseased or unwanted tissue comprises a hollow elongate needle shaft 12 having a needle tip 14 for cutting tissue at a distal end of the needle shaft 12. The needle tip 14 is flared in at least one plane and has a flattened posterior lip 16 and a curved anterior lip 18 to produce a substantially D-shaped tip mouth 20 in a plane that is substantially orthogonal to a central longitudinal axis COC (the needle axis) of the needle 10. A major axis A-A of the tip mouth 20 is larger than an outer diameter of the needle shaft 12 and a minor axis BB is smaller than the major axis A-A. The asymmetry of the tip mouth provides improved cutting action during phacoemulsification.

A surgical device comprising an end effector is disclosed. The surgical device comprises a trigger actuatable to cause the end effector to be energized and a circuit in communication with the trigger. The circuit is configured to, when a first level of force is applied to the trigger, drive the end effector at a first level, when a second level of force is applied to the trigger, drive the end effector at a second level, and, delay by a first period of time between indicating a change in the force applied to the trigger from the first level of force to the second level of force and a change from driving the end effector at the first level to driving the end effector at the second level, wherein the first period of time is sufficient to give a user a warning about the change in the force.

Ultrasonic tip with protrusion defining a preaspiration hole

An ultrasonic tip for use with a surgical handpiece to produce both longitudinal and torsional motion. The ultrasonic tip comprises a shaft having a longitudinal axis extending between proximal and distal ends having respective first and second diameters with the first diameter greater than the second diameter. The ultrasonic tip also comprises a cutting feature coupled to the distal end of the shaft. The shaft defines an aspiration lumen that extends along the longitudinal axis of the shaft. A protrusion on the shaft is positioned between the distal end and the proximal end of the shaft. A portion of the protrusion having a third diameter, and the third diameter is less than the first diameter and the third diameter is greater than the second diameter. An aperture is defined by the protrusion and in fluid communication with the aspiration lumen, and the protrusion reinforces an area surrounding the aperture.

Surgical instruments

A surgical device. The surgical device may comprise a transducer configured to provide vibrations along a longitudinal axis and an end effector coupled to the transducer and extending from the transducer along the longitudinal axis. The surgical device also may comprise a lower jaw extending parallel to the end effector. The lower jaw may comprise a clamp face extending toward the longitudinal axis. Also, the lower jaw may be slidable relative to the end effector to bring the clamp face toward a distal end of the end effector.

Cutting assembly for surgical instrument with clog-reducing tip

A cutting assembly configured to be removably coupled to a drive assembly of a surgical instrument. An inner tube is coaxially and rotatably disposed within an outer tube and defines a lumen in communication with a cutting window. A projection is disposed within the lumen of the inner tube. The projection may include a distal first portion displaced radially inward relative to an interior surface of the inner tube, and a proximal second portion angled relative to the distal first portion. A distance between a proximal boundary of the cutting window and a nearest point on the projection may be less than a diameter of the lumen. An inner surface of the projection permits cutting action to continue until the material is sufficiently reduced to pass between a proximal boundary of the cutting window and the insert. The projection may be formed by an insert secured within the inner tube.

A cutting assembly configured to be removably coupled to a drive assembly of a surgical instrument. An inner tube is coaxially and rotatably disposed within an outer tube and defines a lumen in communication with a cutting window. A projection is disposed within the inner tube. At least a portion of the projection is positioned distal to a proximal boundary of the cutting window. The projection may define a throat having a distance between the proximal boundary of the cutting window on the outer tube and a nearest point on the projection. The throat may be narrower than a diameter of the lumen. An inner surface of the projection permits cutting action to continue until the material is sufficiently reduced to pass through the throat. The projection may be formed by an insert bonded within the inner tube.

A device for removing tissue or bone includes a housing having an outer tube defining an inner lip. A middle tube is supported within the outer tube and includes an opening having teeth at a distal end thereof and a shoulder defined around an outer surface thereof proximate the opening. An inner tube is disposed within the middle tube and includes an opening having teeth at a distal end thereof in registration with the opening in the middle tube. The inner tube couples to a power source and rotates relative to the middle tube such that the teeth cooperate to cut tissue or bone disposed in a cutting window between the openings. A bushing is disposed atop the middle tube against the shoulder, such that, upon assembly, the bushing seats between the shoulder of the middle tube and the inner lip of the outer tube to provide stability therebetween.

The present invention discloses a ball probe ultrasonic bone removal device that is designed to assist surgeons with foraminotomy procedures. The device comprises a shaft at a first end of the device and a spherical ball tip at a second end of the device. In between the shaft and the ball tip is a foot piece that connects to the shaft through an angle. On the foot piece, serrations or a coarse surface cover a portion of the circumference of the foot piece. In some embodiments, serrations or a coarse surface may also cover a portion of the circumference of the shaft. The spherical ball tip is smooth and designed to cause no damage to the sensitive nerves and tissue in the intervertebral foramina, but the surface with the serrations or the coarse protrusions are designed to remove bone and tissue under ultrasonic movement (e.g., vertical vibration, rotational oscillation).

A device for removing tissue includes a housing having an outer tube extending therefrom including an axis defined therealong. A middle tube is supported within the outer tube having an opening at a distal end with an edge. The middle tube includes a swage proximate the area of engagement between the middle and outer tubes. An inner tube is disposed within the middle tube and includes an opening having teeth at a distal end in registration with the opening in the middle tube, the inner tube rotates relative to the middle tube and the teeth, and the edge cooperate to cut tissue. A lumen is defined through the inner tube and extends from the opening to a suction source. The swage of the middle tube and the increased inner diameter associated therewith allows the inner tube to maintain a constant inner diameter along a length thereof, reducing choke points along the lumen.
