The end effector comprises a first jaw member and a second jaw member movable relative to the first jaw member from a closed position to an open position in response to at least one axial motion. In addition, the surgical tool includes a motor configured to generate at least one rotational motion and a motion conversion assembly operably coupled to the motor and the second jaw member, wherein the motion conversion assembly is configured to convert the at least one rotational motion to the at least one axial motion.
Surgical devices and methods utilizing optical coherence tomography (OCT) to monitor and control tissue sealing
Surgical devices and methods for utilizing optical coherence tomography (OCT) to monitor and control tissue sealing are disclosed. The surgical device includes an end effector assembly that includes first and second jaw members that are movable between a first, spaced-apart position and a second proximate position. An OCT system, at least a portion of which is incorporated into the end effector assembly, is configured to sense properties of the tissue, e.g., the structural density of the tissue, disposed between the first and second jaw members. A tissue-sealing energy source may be disposed within at least one of the jaw members and may provide tissue-sealing energy to tissue disposed between the jaw members. A controller, which is coupled to the OCT system and the tissue-sealing energy source, controls the tissue-sealing energy generated by the tissue-sealing energy source based on the properties of the tissue sensed by the OCT system.
Surgical instruments with torsion spine drive arrangements
Surgical instruments with articulatable surgical end effectors and rotary driven flexible drive members.
VESSEL HARVESTING APPARATUS AND METHOD
An apparatus for harvesting a vessel from a body, includes: a cannula having a dissector for advancing along the vessel to create a tunnel, the dissector having a transparent portion; and an energy tool moveably coupled to the cannula, wherein the energy tool is configured to separate a pediculated vessel having at least a segment of the vessel and a pedicle around the segment of the vessel from surrounding tissue, and wherein at least a part of the energy tool is visible through the transparent portion of the dissector during use of the energy tool.
MULTIFUNCTIONAL SURGICAL INSTRUMENT
A multifunctional surgical instrument (1) is provided. The multifunctional surgical instrument (1) comprises a proximal portion (13) and two legs (14), each leg comprising a distal end (11, 12), wherein a default position of the multifunctional surgical instrument is an open position, wherein the distal ends (11, 12) of the legs (14) do not meet in the open position, characterized in that each leg (14) comprises an aspiration half-channel (26, 27), the proximal portion (13) comprises an aspiration connection (29) and at least one of the distal ends (11, 12) comprises at least one aspiration orifice (28), wherein the two half-channels (26, 27) are configured to form an air-tight and water-tight continuous channel (25) connecting the at least one aspiration orifice (28) to the aspiration connection (29) when the multifunctional surgical instrument is in a fully closed position and are configured to open the aspiration channel (25) when the multifunctional surgical instrument is not in the fully closed position.
SURGICAL INSTRUMENTS INCORPORATING ULTRASONIC AND ELECTROSURGICAL FUNCTIONALITY
A surgical instrument end effector assembly includes a first jaw member defining an insulative tissue-contacting surface and first and second electrically-conductive tissue-contacting surfaces disposed on either side of the insulative surface. A second jaw member of the end effector assembly includes an ultrasonic blade body positioned to oppose the insulative surface of the first jaw member, and first and second electrically-conductive tissue-contacting surfaces disposed on either side of the ultrasonic blade body and positioned to oppose the first and second electrically-conductive surfaces, respectively, of the first jaw member. The first jaw member is movable relative to the second jaw member between a spaced-apart position and an approximated position to grasp tissue therebetween. The first and second electrically-conductive surfaces of the second jaw member are movable, independent of the first jaw member, relative to the first jaw member and the ultrasonic blade body between a retracted position and an extended position.
Ergonomic surgical instruments
A surgical instrument including a trigger configured to be actuated by a proximally directed force and by a distally directed force. The trigger may include a proximal trigger portion having a first length and a distal trigger hook comprising a distal portion having a second length. The second length may be less than the first length. The distal trigger hook may be coupled to the proximal trigger portion.
Replaceable staple cartridges for surgical instruments
A replaceable staple cartridge comprising a cartridge body, staples, and a staple cartridge tray secured to the staple cartridge body is disclosed. The cartridge body comprises a first longitudinal slot, a deck, and first sides extending downwardly from the deck, wherein an edge is defined between each first side and the deck. The cartridge body further comprises staple cavities defined in said deck and recesses defined in the deck proximal to the staple cavities. The staple cartridge tray comprises a bottom comprising a second longitudinal slot defined therein and second sides extending upwardly from the bottom, wherein each second side comprises a proximal end including a projection, wherein each second side is adjacent to a first side, and wherein each projection wraps around an edge and extends downwardly into a recess defined in the deck.
