Safety cutting device

A safety cutting device includes a slidable insert that moves longitudinally within a cavity of a housing. The slidable insert has a cutting blade attached and moves within the housing from a safe position in which the blade is covered to an exposed position for cutting. The safety device has a release button positioned near an anterior end of the housing. A biasing member automatically retracts the blade when the release button is activated.

An instrument configured to attach to a bone anchoring element during surgery includes an elongate portion and an end portion having a first side and an opposite second side, where the elongate portion extends away from the first side, and where an opening is defined at the second side to accommodate at least a portion of a head of the bone anchoring element. The opening of the end portion has a first section sized to permit insertion and removal of the head therethrough, and a second section forming a seat for the head. When the head is held in the seat, the seat prevents removal of the head through the opening, while the head is movable unobstructedly from the second section back towards the first section.

Surgical knife safety handle having user operable lock

A surgical knife safety device having a handle, a blade connected to the handle, and a guard carried by the handle for sliding movement between a retracted position in which the blade is exposed for use, and an extended position for covering the sharp cutting edge of the blade. In the retracted position, an enlarged guard radius is provided at the distal end of the handle to allow improved handle control and blade orientation. The enlarged guard radius is positioned to allow the user to firmly grip a large distal handle portion which is preferably molded as a single piece with the blade holder, preventing unwanted blade or handle movement due to guard mechanism tolerances. A spring, such as leaf spring or a cantilever beam, and a pair of detents or slots are provided to fix the guard in the extended or retracted position and to provide resistance during movement between the two positions. Additionally, a pushback prevention mechanism, a user operable lock and a drop-force operable lock are provided to prevent accidental retraction of the guard from the fully extended and guarded position.

The device includes a handle, an actuator positioned thereon, and a sheath attached thereto, where the sheath surrounds a shaft with a blade attached to the distal end thereof. The device also includes a drive and locking mechanism connected to the actuator and to the shaft within the internal space of the handle, wherein the drive and locking mechanism is configured to move the shaft in the first direction and lock the shaft in the shaft first position in response to movement of the actuator in one of the first direction or the second direction, and wherein the drive mechanism is configured to move the shaft in the second direction and lock the shaft in the shaft second position in response to movement of the actuator in the other one of the first direction or the second direction.

Robotic surgical instruments with rack-based translation and firing transmission

A robotic surgical tool includes a handle providing a first drive input and a second drive input, an elongate shaft extendable through the handle and having an end effector arranged at a distal end thereof, and a rack extending along a portion of the shaft and operatively coupled to a knife located at the end effector. Actuation of the first drive input transitions the rack between a locked configuration, where the rack is locked to the shaft, and a released configuration, where the rack is released from the shaft. Actuation of the second drive input with the rack in the locked configuration drives the rack and causes z-axis translation of the shaft through the handle. Actuation of the second drive input with the rack in the released configuration drives the rack relative to the shaft and thereby advances or retracts the knife at the end effector.
