09717521 · 2017-08-01 · ·

A knife (10) has a handle (15) with a mount (16) for affixing a removable blade (11). A concave surface (17) of the mount supports an elongate protrusion (18) for engaging a complementary slot (12) in the blade and reaches a landing (20) rearward of the tip that is exposed when the blade is mounted on the handle with a surface of the blade being completely supported by the concave surface. A channel (25) in the landing is dimensioned such that a rearmost part (26) thereof remains exposed when the blade is mounted on the handle. The blade is removed by inserting a curved lever (30) into the channel underneath a rearmost part of the blade and swiveling the lever so as to disengage the blade from the elongate protrusion.

SAFETY SCALPEL HANDLE

A scalpel handle includes an outer body defining a first end and a cavity therein and an insert defining a blade holder disposed at a first end thereof and positionable within the cavity of the outer body with the blade holder extending outwardly away from the first end of the outer portion. A shield is coupled with the body and positionable around the blade holder, and a removal wedge fixed with respect to the shield and disposed in a substantially fixed lateral position at least partially aligned with a portion of the blade holder.

Safety-blade dispenser and related methods

Safety-blade dispensers for safely storing surgical blades prior to surgery and optionally for retrieving used surgical blades after surgery. In either case, the safety-blade dispenser is configured to store one or more surgical blades in an orientation that allows a user to simply and safely attach a surgical tool handle to the surgical blades (and optionally remove the handle from the surgical blades) without requiring the user to physically touch or manipulate the surgical blades by hand. The safety-blade dispensers disclosed herein may be used alone or in conjunction with a system and method of preventing wrong-site surgery.

Coupler for blades and handles

A device is provided for coupling and decoupling a blade and a handle, wherein the device includes a housing that defines an interior chamber and an exterior slot adjacent the interior chamber. The exterior slot is dimensioned to pass the blade and is configured to receive a portion of the handle. The housing defines a groove in the interior chamber configured to retain the blade in a ready configuration for coupling the blade to the handle. The device includes a pivot member secured within the interior chamber of the housing. The pivot member is pivotable between an unlocked configuration and a locked configuration. The unlocked configuration of the pivot member is configured to allow the blade in the ready configuration to be coupled to the handle. The locked configuration of the pivot member is configured to lock the blade within the interior chamber.

An apparatus for detaching a blade from a scalpel handle is provided. The blade has a cutting portion and a heel portion and is removably mounted on a tang of the scalpel handle. The apparatus has a flexible blade detachment member with a stepped portion for engaging the heel of the blade as the handle is withdrawn and a leading angled portion. A backing member is provided with the detachment member being arranged adjacent the backing member so that during use the detachment member flexes in only one direction, away from the mounting tang in response to force applied by the handle to the leading angled portion thereby causing the blade and the handle to be separated and detached relative to each other. Upon withdrawing the tang from the opening, the stepped portion engages the heel of the blade resulting in detachment of the blade from the tang.
