Dynamic decompressive craniotomy fixation devices and related methods

The present disclosure provides dynamic cranial fixation devices and related methods for attaching a resected bone portion(s), or a bone flap, to the skull in such a manner that allows for brain swelling to occur with minimal constraint following a craniotomy or craniectomy. The present disclosure provides dynamic cranial fixation devices and related methods that provide outward movement of the bone flap as the brain swells underneath the bone flap to prevent or reduce a rise in the intracranial pressure. Once the brain swelling resolves, the dynamic cranial fixation devices and related methods of the present disclosure allow the bone flap to return to its original position (before resection) without further surgery, implantation or the like. Once the bone flap return to its original position (or substantially similar position), the bone flap may fuse with the neighboring bone(s), potentially with the assistance of one or more fusion aid.

Cranial burr hole cover
10675060 · 2020-06-09 · ·

A method of affixing a cranial burr hole cover comprising an elongated internal bracing member, a locking external cover member joined by one or more connecting members, and a locking mechanism, whereby the interior bracing member is tilted and one end is inserted through the burr hole and under the skull. The internal bracing member is then moved laterally relative to the burr hole to allow the opposite end of the internal bracing member to clear the opposite edge of the burr hole. The internal bracing member is then centered beneath the burr hole. The external cover member is now moved distally toward the skull to cover the burr hole. The locking mechanism secures the cover in place on the skull and the connecting members extending from the cover member are cut flush with the cover member.

DRILL GUIDE FIXTURES, CRANIAL INSERTION FIXTURES, AND RELATED METHODS AND ROBOTIC SYSTEMS

A drill guide fixture may be configured to prepare a skull for attachment of a cranial insertion fixture. The drill guide fixture may include a central drill guide and a bone anchor guide at a base of the drill guide fixture. The central drill guide may define a central drill guide hole therethrough, wherein the central drill guide hole has a first opening at a base of the drill guide fixture and a second opening spaced apart from the base of the drill guide fixture. The bone anchor drill guide may define a bone anchor drill guide hole therethrough, and the bone anchor drill guide hole may be offset from the central drill guide hole in a direction that is perpendicular with respect to a direction of the central drill guide hole. Related cranial insertion fixtures, robotic systems, and methods are also discussed.

Bone stabilization device and method of production

The present disclosure discloses a bone stabilization device (also referred to as a bone tape), which includes a composite flexible construct including a rigidifiable biocompatible sheet structure having first and second opposed surfaces. A biocompatible cement is located on the first surface. In use the composite flexible construct is applied to a bone with the cement contacted directly to the bone. The cement is made of a material that, once adhered to the bone, is curable to mechanically and/or ionically bond to the sheet structure and to chemically bond to the bone to achieve a permanent bond. The bone tape allows simultaneous alignment and stabilization of multiple articulated fragments for successful 3D reconstruction of shattered bones. Initial flexibility and translucency provided by the bone tape can facilitate the temporary stabilization and alignment adjustment of multiple fragments, prior to permanent rigid bonding.

CRANIAL BONE FASTENING DEVICE FOR FASTENING A CRANIAL BONE PORTION TO A POSITIONING DEVICE

The invention relates to a cranial bone fastening device (1) for temporarily fastening a cranial bone portion or multiple cranial bone portions to a main body of a positioning device in order to orient the cranial bone portions relative to one another, wherein a pin-like fixing element portion (2) is provided, one side of which is designed to contact the cranial bone portion or multiple cranial bone portions in order to secure the cranial bone portion or cranial bone portions to the main body of the positioning device upon interaction with a counter portion (3) on the other side of the cranial bone portion or cranial bone portions.

BONE DRILLING COVER DEVICE

A bone drilling cover device comprises an upper fastening member and a lower fastening member. The upper fastening member includes a first base portion and a first coupling portion. The lower fastening member includes a second base portion and a second coupling portion engagable with the first coupling portion. The second base portion is composed of at least one first arm and at least one second arm. The first arm has a length greater than a length of the second arm. A total length of the first arm and the second arm is greater than a diameter of a drilled hole. Through the first arm and the second arm having different lengths, the first arm and the second arm can be inserted in an oblique manner and positioned to the underside of the drilled hole for covering the drilled hole of any bone.

Implantable bone support systems

An implantable bone support system including a shelf clip supported on a portion of the perimeter of the skull opening. The shelf clip includes upper and lower body portions. The legs of the lower body portion are positioned such that one leg is engaged with the skull perimeter in a direction away from the skull opening. The opposing leg is positioned into the skull opening to form a portion of a shelf for receiving the bone flap or implant. In an adjustable height embodiment, the ratcheting leg of the upper body portion engages a central post, via ratchet teeth on the leg and the central post, and is pressed into engagement to capture the skull between the upper and lower body portions. The removable or locking leg is formed for engagement with the upper body portion of the clip, and engages an external surface of the bone flap or implant to capture the bone flap or implant within the shelf created by the clips within the skull opening.
