Heat transfer through an ablation electrode
An apparatus includes a flexible electrically-insulating substrate including an inner surface and an outer surface. The substrate is shaped to define multiple channels passing between the inner surface and the outer surface, at least some of the channels being concave channels. The apparatus further includes an outer layer of an electrically-conducting metal covering at least part of the outer surface, an inner layer of the electrically-conducting metal covering at least part of the inner surface, and respective columns of the electrically-conducting metal that fill the channels such as to connect the outer layer to the inner layer.
Cooled radiofrequency ablation probe
A cooling radiofrequency ablation probe for delivering electrical and thermal energy to tissue of a patient's body is provided. The probe comprises a handle having an upper portion, a lower portion, and a Luer connector. The probe further comprises an extended electrocap assembly interfacing with one end of the handle, and a cable-tubing assembly interfacing with another end of the handle. The cable-tubing assembly includes an electrical cable that terminates at an electrical connector and a dual-lumen fluid tubing that terminates at inlet and outlet fluid connectors. An active tip of the extended electrocap assembly is configured to deliver the electrical and thermal energy to the tissue of the patient's body.
Directional cryoablation system
A cryoablation system is provided that can assume a directional activated state and includes a cryoablation probe and a controller. The cryoablation probe has an active region that includes a cooling compartment and an opposing heating compartment that are thermally insulated from one another to minimize energy losses therebetween such that ice is selectively and directionally formed at the target site. The cooling compartment can include a temperature sensor and an exhaust tube to guide a fluid or gas that exhibits a Joule Thomson cooling effect through the probe. The heating compartment can include a temperature sensor and a heater cartridge having a heater zone. The controller of the cryoablation system can process temperature measurement data from the sensors of the heating and cooling compartments and regulate the heater zone based on the temperature measurement data processing to maintain a temperature that is sufficiently constant to mitigate or prevent formation of ice on the heating compartment.
Tissue ablation catheter with an insulator between inner and outer electrodes
A catheter for tissue ablation with one or more electrodes attached to the inner surface of the catheter body facing the lumen, and one or more electrodes attached to the outer surface. The electrodes are offset from the distal end of the catheter. The material between the inner and outer electrodes is an insulator and may be for example a dielectric with a high dielectric constant. This catheter configuration generates an electric field that bends around the tip of the catheter. The field strength near the catheter tip is relatively symmetric; therefore, tissue ablation depth is relatively insensitive to catheter orientation. Embodiments may have multiple inner or outer electrodes and may switch voltage configurations across electrodes to vary the electric field direction over time, improving ablation consistency.
ELECTROSURGICAL TOOL WITH CAPACITIVE COUPLING MITIGATION SHEATH ASSEMBLY
A monopolar surgical tool is disclosed. The monopolar surgical tool comprises a shaft assembly comprising an electrically-conductive proximal portion and an electrically-insulative distal portion comprising a distal end. The monopolar surgical tool further comprises an end effector coupled to the distal end, an RF conductor extending distally through the shaft assembly to the end effector, and a guard electrode extending distally through the shaft assembly to an electrical contact region along the electrically-insulative distal portion, and a multi-layer sheath assembly. The multi-layer sheath assembly comprises an electrically-insulative inner layer surrounding a portion of the end effector and extending proximally along a portion of the shaft assembly, an electrically-insulative outer layer, and an electrically-conductive layer positioned between the electrically-insulative inner layer and the electrically-insulative outer layer. The electrically-conductive layer provides a return path for leaked current to the electrical contact region and along the guard electrode within the shaft assembly.
MEDICAL TREATMENT TOOL AND ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVE MEDICAL SYSTEM
Provided is a scissors-type medical treatment tool capable of not only local tissue fixation in an incision/cutting part but also heating on side surfaces of electrodes of a forceps/tweezers type. It has been found out that a tissue part in which tissue is nipped between blades and a tissue part which is brought into abutment against side surfaces of the blades can be heated simultaneously or sequentially by optimizing arrangement of microwave application electrodes and microwave receiver electrodes in a blade pair (in particular, by causing coagulation to be performed evenly on the left and right of the blades), and the present invention has therefore been achieved.
CURRENT GENERATOR FOR A MEDICAL TREATMENT SYSTEM
A current generator for a medical treatment system is disclosed herein. In one example, the medical treatment system can include a cable and a current generator. The cable can include a distal portion that couples to a medical device and a proximal portion. The proximal portion of the cable can include a first and second conductor, with each conductor having an exposed contact region. The current generator can releasably couple to the cable to deliver an electrical signal. The current generator can include an inner chamber that can receive at least a portion of the cable. The current generator can also include first and second electrical connectors, which can electrically connect to the conductors. The current generator can also include a cable guide that can assist with position the cable within the inner chamber and a cable lock that can lock a part of the cable in position.
ENERGY BASED SURGICAL INSTRUMENTS AND SYSTEMS
A surgical system includes a housing, an ultrasonic transducer supported by the housing, an end effector assembly distally-spaced from the housing, a clamp lever, and a sensor. The end effector assembly includes an ultrasonic blade operably coupled to the ultrasonic transducer for receiving ultrasonic energy produced by the ultrasonic transducer, and a jaw member pivotable relative to the blade from an open position towards a clamping position for clamping tissue between the jaw member and the blade and imparting a clamping force to the clamped tissue. The clamp lever is operably coupled to the housing and the jaw member such that actuation of the clamp lever relative to the housing pivots the jaw member towards the blade. The sensor is configured to sense whether the clamp lever is sufficiently actuated so as to impart the clamping force to the clamped tissue.
PLASMA CORING TOOL WITH ENDPOINT DETECTION
An electrosurgical device including an elongated body extending from a proximal end to a distal end and defining an evacuation lumen. The elongated body including an irrigation channel carried by the elongate body, the irrigation channel configured to deliver a fluid to a target tissue adjacent to the distal end, a coring electrode at the distal end of the elongated body, where the coring electrode defines an opening to the evacuation lumen, and where the coring electrode is configured to operate in a monopolar configuration to deliver radio frequency (RF) plasma energy to adjacent tissue to cut a volume of the target tissue, and a dielectric coating on at least a distal portion of the elongated body, the dielectric coating electrically insulating the elongated body from target tissue and the volume of cut target tissue, where the dielectric coating comprises a ceramic material.
