A uterine manipulator includes a shaft defining a proximal end portion and a distal end portion, a handle operably coupled to the proximal end portion of the shaft, and a distal assembly operably coupled to the distal end portion of the shaft. The distal assembly includes a colpotomy cup and an elongated tip extending distally from the colpotomy cup. At least a portion of the distal assembly is releasable from the distal end portion of the shaft and configured to engage tissue and to operably couple to a surgical tool to enable the surgical tool to perform at least one surgical task on tissue engaged by the at least a portion of the distal assembly.

Electrical instrument for applying radiofrequency and/or microwave frequency energy to tissue, comprising: a distal part comprising an instrument tip for applying radiofrequency and/or microwave frequency energy to tissue, the instrument tip comprising first and second conductive elements; a coaxial feed cable comprising an inner conductor, a tubular outer conductor coaxial with the inner conductor, and dielectric material separating the inner and outer conductors, the coaxial feed cable being for conveying radiofrequency and/or microwave frequency energy to the distal part; wherein: the inner conductor is electrically connected to the first conductive element and the outer conductor is electrically connected to the second conductive element through a rotatable connection between the distal part and the coaxial feed cable that allows rotation of the distal part relative to the coaxial feed cable; and the instrument comprises an actuator for rotating the distal part in a first rotational direction relative to the feed cable.

Control of surgical field irrigation

A surgical system includes an electrosurgical tool configured to be releasably coupled to a surgical robotic system having a control system. The tool has a shaft having an end effector with treatment electrodes configured to apply electrosurgical power to a tissue, and aspiration and irrigation tubes having ports in the vicinity of the electrodes. The control system can control a flow rate of an irrigation fluid based on deviation of power delivered by the electrodes to the tissue from a power set point, or based on an aspiration rate that is controlled based on tissue impedance. The tool can have first and second ports and a conduit configured to selectively provide or aspirate fluids through at least one of the ports. At least one of a flow rate and an aspiration rate are controlled by the control system based on a rotational angle of the shaft relative to a ground.

ELECTROSURGICAL SYSTEM

An electrosurgical system can include an electrosurgical generator, a feedback circuit or controller, and an electrosurgical tool. The feedback circuit can provide an electrosurgery endpoint by determining the phase end point of a tissue to be treated. The electrosurgical system can include more than one electrosurgical tool for different electrosurgical operations and can include a variety of user interface features and audio/visual performance indicators. The electrosurgical system can also power conventional bipolar electrosurgical tools and direct current surgical appliances.

Arthroscopic devices and methods

A medical device includes an elongated sleeve having a longitudinal axis, a proximal end and a distal end. A cutting member having sharp edges formed from a wear-resistant ceramic material is carried at the distal end of the elongated sleeve. A motor drive is coupled to the proximal end of the elongated sleeve to rotate the sleeve at cutting member at high speed to cut bone and other hard tissue. An electrode is carried in a surface portion of ceramic cutting member for cautery or radiofrequency ablation of tissue when the sleeve and cutting member are is a stationary position.

A surgical instrument, comprising a motor drive unit comprising a motor drive unit; a rotary surgical end effector arranged to be coupled to the motor drive unit; and a coupling means for coupling the motor drive unit and the rotary surgical end effector, the coupling means being configured such that there is only one possible rotational alignment between the rotary surgical end effector and the motor drive unit when coupled. This arrangement guarantees the rotational position of the rotary surgical end effector in relation to the rotational position of the motor drive unit. This enables quick and easy control of the rotational position of the rotary surgical end effector.

Electrosurgical systems with integrated and external power sources

A surgical system comprising a generator and a surgical instrument configured to receive power from the generator is disclosed. The surgical instrument comprises a housing, a shaft defining a longitudinal axis, an end effector, and an internal charge accumulator. The housing comprises a motor. The end effector is operably responsive to actuations from the electric motor, transitionable between an open and closed configuration, and rotatable about an articulation axis transverse to the longitudinal axis. The generator is incapable of supplying a sufficient power directly to the motor to perform the actuations. The internal charge accumulator is in electric communication with the generator and supplies power to the motor. The internal charge accumulator is chargeable by the generator to a threshold value at a charge rate dependent on a charge level of the internal charge accumulator. The charge rate is independent of a charge expenditure by the surgical instrument.

The controller has a processing component, configured to assign a circuit status to a circuit comprising the at least one electrode. IF (PF≈0) and ((Vrms/Irms)≥T), THEN the circuit status is “open”. IF (PF≈0) and ((Vrms/Irms)<T), THEN the circuit status is “short”. PF is a power factor of power applied to the electrosurgical device. T is a threshold value.
