The method for the subzero start-up of the fuel cell includes: introducing a gas containing hydrogen having a mass percentage of 5% to 100% to a hydrogen electrode and an air electrode of the fuel cell (2) under a condition of minus 50° C. to 0° C.; applying a current or a voltage to the fuel cell (2), and utilizing ohmic heat generation, reaction heat, and concentration overpotential heat generation of the fuel cell (2) to raise the fuel cell (2) to a required temperature or to cause the fuel cell (2) to reach to a set time, so as to implement the subzero start-up of the fuel cell.

The system may have a current sensor configured to detect current flowing through the fuel cell stack. The system may have a plurality of actuators, which may include at least one injector, a pump, and a shut valve. The system may have an electronic control unit (ECU). The ECU may estimate pressures of the hydrogen gas and non-hydrogen gases in the circuit. The ECU may determine a current increase rate based on the detected current. The ECU may apply a compensatory hydrogen gas stoic to a base hydrogen gas stoic to meet a target hydrogen gas stoic by controlling one or more of the actuators based on the estimated pressures when the current increase rate is above a predetermined threshold value.

A fuel cell system includes a solid oxide fuel cell capable of generating power by receiving a supply of a reformed gas and an oxidant gas; an oxidant gas supply device that supplies the oxidant gas to the fuel cell; a reforming unit that supplies the reformed gas to the fuel cell; a fuel supply device that supplies a fuel which is a raw material for the reformed gas to the reforming unit; a combustion unit that combusts discharged gases of the fuel cell, wherein the reforming unit can reform the fuel into the reformed gas by exchanging heat with a combustion gas produced by the combustion unit; and a first control unit controls the fuel supply device to additionally supply the fuel to the fuel cell through the reforming unit in order to prevent the oxidant gas from flowing in from downstream of a fuel electrode of the fuel cell at the time of stopping the system. The fuel cell system further includes a second control unit that controls to supply the fuel to the reforming unit before the additional supply so that the temperature of the reformed gas flowing into the fuel cell does not exceed a predetermined temperature at the time of stopping the system.

Embodiment methods may include determining an impedance of a set of fuel cells using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, determining an ohmic polarization of the set of fuel cells from the impedance, determining a concentration polarization of the set of fuel cells from the impedance, comparing the ohmic polarization of the set of fuel cells to a first threshold, comparing the concentration polarization of the set of fuel cells to a second threshold, and initiating a corrective action when the ohmic polarization is above the first threshold or when the concentration polarization is below the second threshold.

The fuel cell systems comprise a solid polymer electrolyte fuel cell with a regulating apparatus for regulating the pressure of fuel supplied to the anode inlet of the fuel cell, in which the outlet pressure from the regulating apparatus oscillates during operation. The methods involve monitoring an electrical output of the fuel cell during operation, determining the amplitude of oscillation in the electrical output, and then, if the determined amplitude of oscillation in the electrical output exceeds a predetermined amount thereby indicating a fuel starvation condition, taking a remedial action to lessen the fuel starvation condition.
