In at least one instance, the control system monitors the electric current drawn by an electric motor and adapts the operation of the electric motor based on the electric current being drawn by the motor. The control system slows the electric motor down when the electric current drawn by the electric motor exceeds a threshold. The control system modulates the width, or duration, of voltage pulses applied to the electric motor to control the speed of the electric motor.

A circuit for generating a radio-frequency signal for a surgical device is disclosed. The MOSFET driver receives the DC voltage supplied from the voltage regulator and has a local oscillator. The local oscillator switches the first MOSFET and the second MOSFET on and off at a frequency generated by the local oscillator. The circuit further includes a transformer connected to the first and second MOSFETs, having a center tap and a main voltage applied at the center tap, and providing an alternating current (AC) output.

A surgical assembly and system are disclosed for use in performing a surgical procedure on a patient. The assembly comprises a surgical tool, the tool being arranged to receive a first signal for use in cutting or cauterizing tissue of the patient during the surgical procedure and an electrode disposed upon the tool. The assembly further comprises an electrical generator communicatively couplable with the electrode, for generating a second signal for use in generating an electrical field from the electrode proximate a site of the surgical procedure, for removing particles suspended proximate the surgical site. The assembly further comprises a controller for controlling the application of the second signal to the electrode, a sensing arrangement for sensing an activation status of the first signal, the sensing arrangement being communicatively coupled with the controller and arranged to output a sensing signal to the controller in dependence of the activation status of the first signal. The controller is arranged to enable the application of the second signal to the electrode upon receiving a sensing signal representative of an activation of the first signal. An electrode assembly comprising a plurality of electrically conductive elements for use with a surgical tool is also disclosed.

Also disclosed is a method of employing the above disclosed device, apparatus or system or variations thereof to perform a surgical procedure or operation at a surgical site and to remove or reduce smoke particles generated during the surgical procedure or operation.
