Unintended current flow or plasma discharge has been observed in known illuminated electrosurgical devices having a metallic tubular heat sink surrounding a conductive electrode and an illumination element, and having a distal outer edge that abuts against the light emitting element. An insulating, shielding or other isolating element that prevents or discourages unintended plasma formation between the distal outer edge and nearby patient tissue can reduce the potential for tissue damage to a patient or injury to a surgeon.

ADAPTER ASSEMBLY FOR ATTACHING A LIGHTING DEVICE TO A HANDHELD ELECTROSURGICAL INSTRUMENT

An adapter assembly is disclosed for attaching a lighting device to a handheld surgical instrument, which includes a first body portion configured to engage a distal end portion of the surgical instrument at a position along a central axis thereof, and a second body portion configured to support a lighting device adjacent the distal end portion of the surgical instrument, such that an illumination axis of the lighting device angularly intersects the central axis of the surgical instrument.

PINION BLADE DRIVE MECHANISM FOR A LAPAROSCOPIC VESSEL DISSECTOR

A surgical instrument comprises a handle assembly including an actuator. An elongate shaft extends distally from the handle assembly and defines a longitudinal axis. A reciprocating member extends at least partially through the elongate shaft, and is mounted for longitudinal motion through the elongate shaft in response to manipulation of the actuator. A drive mechanism includes a first rotating component coupled to the actuator to induce rotational motion in the first rotating component. A second rotating component is coupled to the first rotating component such that rotational motion in the first rotating component induces rotational motion in the second rotating component. The second rotating component is coupled to the reciprocating member such that rotational motion of the second rotating component induces longitudinal motion in the reciprocating member.

The present invention relates to methods of removing a lesion from a patient. A method of removing a lesion from a patient includes positioning wire loops of a probe device relative to the lesion. The wire loops are simultaneously rotated and expanded to cut material from the lesion. Irrigation fluid is supplied, via the probe device, to irrigate the material cut from the lesion. The supplied irrigation fluid is aspirated, via the probe device, to facilitate removal of the material cut from the lesion.

A coaxially-driven tissue aspiration instrument having a hand-supportable housing with a stationary tubing connector provided at the rear of the housing and receiving a length of flexible tubing connected to a vacuum source. A twin cannula assembly is coupled to a an electromagnetic cannula drive mechanism disposed within a guide tube structure mounted in the hand-supportable housing and powered by electrical power signals so as to periodically exert forces on the a front-loaded cannula base device slidably supported within the guide tube structure, and to which the inner cannula is releasably connected. The coaxially exerted forces cause the front-loaded cannula base device, and thus inner cannula, to reciprocate within the guide tube structure, while tissue is being aspirated along the inner cannula lumen, through the reciprocating front-loaded cannula base device, and through the stationary tubing connector, and along the flexible tubing towards the vacuum source.

ACTIVE CONTROL OF SURGICAL SMOKE EVACUATION SYSTEMS

A surgical smoke evacuation system includes an imaging device configured to capture an image of a surgical site, a smoke evacuator in communication with the imaging device and including a suction generator configured to create a vacuum pressure, an electrosurgical pencil including a nozzle, a suction conduit coupling the nozzle to the smoke evacuator, a processor, and a memory. The memory includes instructions stored thereon which, when executed by the processor, cause the surgical smoke evacuation system to: identify a feature in the captured image of the surgical site; classify an amount of smoke in the image using a machine learning network based on the identified feature; and dynamically adjust the vacuum pressure generated by the smoke evacuator based on the classified amount of smoke in the image.
