An apparatus and a method for producing a virtual electrode within or upon a tissue to be treated with radio frequency alternating electric current. An apparatus in accord with the present disclosure includes a supply of a conductive or electrolytic fluid to be provided to the patient, an alternating current generator, and a processor for creating, maintaining, and controlling the ablation process by the interstitial or surficial delivery of the fluid to a tissue and the delivery of electric power to the tissue via the virtual electrode. A method in accord with the present disclosure includes delivering a conductive fluid to a predetermined tissue ablation site for a predetermined time period, applying a predetermined power level of radio frequency current to the tissue, monitoring at least one of several parameters, and adjusting either the applied power and/or the fluid flow in response to the measured parameters.

ARTHROSCOPIC DEVICES AND METHODS

An arthroscopic system includes a re-useable, sterilizable handle integrated with a single umbilical cable or conduit. The single umbilical cable or conduit carries electrical power from a power and/or control console to the handle for operating both a motor drive unit within the handle and delivering the RF power to a disposable RF probe or cutter which may be detachably connected to the handle. The RF power delivered to the handle and on to the probe or cutter is typically bi-polar, where the handle includes first and second electrical bi-polar contacts that couple to corresponding bi-polar electrical contacts on a hub of the disposable RF probe or cutter is connected to the handle.

Tissue treatment system and method for tissue perfusion using feedback control

A system, ablation probe, and method is provided for treating tissue, e.g., tissue having tumors. The treatment system is configured to automatically deliver infusaid to tissue when needed and comprises an ablation probe having an ablative element and at least one perfusion exit port. The system further comprises an ablation source operably coupled to the ablative element, and a pump assembly operably coupled to the perfusion exit pots). The pump assembly is configured for pumping infusaid out through the perfusion exit port(s), preferably during the ablation process. The system further comprises a feedback device configured for controlling the amount of infusaid displaced by the pump assembly based on a sensed tissue parameter, e.g., tissue temperature or tissue impedance.

Device and methods for nerve modulation using a novel ablation catheter with polymeric ablative elements

The disclosure pertains to an intravascular catheter for nerve modulation, comprising an elongate member having a proximal end and a distal end, a balloon having a lumen and a balloon wall, the balloon wall comprising RF permeable sections and non-electrically conductive sections, an electrode disposed within the balloon and extending distally to the furthest distal RF permeable section. The RF permeable sections may comprise a plurality of RF permeable windows, each window having a greater circumferential dimension than an axial dimension. The intravascular system is suited for modulation of renal nerves.

DEVICES AND METHODS FOR DELIVERING FLUID TO TISSUE DURING ABLATION THERAPY

Devices and methods for delivering fluid to tissue during ablation therapy are described herein. An exemplary device can include an elongate body having an inner lumen, outlet ports, and an ablation element configured to heat tissue. A flow resistance of the elongate body can increase along a length of the elongate body containing the outlet ports in a proximal to distal direction. This can be accomplished by, for example, varying outlet port size or relative spacing, decreasing a cross-sectional area of the inner lumen through which fluid can flow using a flow diverter or tapered inner lumen sidewalls, or limiting a ratio between a total area of the outlet ports and a cross-sectional area of the inner lumen. Adjusting flow resistance of the elongate body can provide more uniform fluid distribution or a desired non-uniform distribution.

An electrosurgical instrument is disclosed, having a first electrode having a planar face, a second electrode; an electrically insulative body, a fluid channel, a conductive wire, and a tubular seal. The tubular seal prevents saline from extending into a gap between the wire and the electrically insulative body of the instrument. The tubular seal is disposed around the wire, and extends between the wire and the body.

ELECTRODE UNIT AND ENDOSCOPE SYSTEM

An electrode unit includes: an electrode supporting member provided with a pair of distal end rigid members, surfaces of which are covered by an electrically insulating material, and an elastic region having lower bending rigidity than bending rigidity of each of the pair of distal end rigid members; an electrode configured with electrode bodies respectively protruding downward from the pair of distal end rigid members of the electrode supporting member and a spanning portion that spans between respective lower end portions of the electrode bodies; and an operation member provided in a proximal end rigid member, and configured to move relative to the proximal end rigid member to cause the electrode to move in a direction in which the electrode protrudes relative to the distal end rigid members.
