An electrosurgical instrument having a microwave ablation antenna dimensioned to be suitable for insertion into a pancreas via a surgical scoping device, to provide a rapid and accurate alternative to known RF ablation techniques. The electrosurgical instrument comprises: a proximal coaxial transmission line for conveying microwave electromagnetic (EM) energy; a distal radiating portion; and an intermediate impedance transformer arranged to match an impedance of the coaxial transmission line to an impedance of the distal radiating portion, wherein the distal radiating portion comprises a microwave antenna for emitting the microwave EM energy conveyed by the coaxial transmission line, wherein the distal radiating portion has a maximum outer diameter less than an outer diameter of the coaxial transmission line. With these features, the instrument is able to deliver microwave energy via a small diameter structure.

An electrosurgical system includes an electrosurgical generator configured to provide electrosurgical energy to an electrosurgical device coupled thereto which, in turn, delivers electrosurgical energy to tissue. The electrosurgical device may include a plurality of sensors configured to detect one or more tissue properties and output a detected tissue property signal relating thereto. One or more multiplexers having a plurality of channels are electrically connected to each of the corresponding plurality of sensors. The multiplexer(s) may be configured to receive the detected tissue property signal from each sensor of the plurality of sensors and output at least one output signal along a signal line. The signal line is configured to connect to the electrosurgical generator to control a power output of the electrosurgical generator. A channel select algorithm is configured to automatically select channels from the plurality of channels.

MICROWAVE ABLATION ANTENNA SYSTEM WITH REFLECTOR AND SLOT

An antenna system is provided that includes a coaxial cable, an antenna, a reflector wall, and a slot wall. The reflector wall is formed of a conductive material connected to a conductive shield to extend in an axial direction, is separated from an antenna conductor by a second dielectric material in a radial direction relative to the antenna conductor, and partially surrounds the antenna conductor in the radial direction from a first angle to a second angle when projected into a radial plane. The slot wall is formed through a portion of the conductive shield to expose a dielectric material from a third angle to a fourth angle when projected into the radial plane, is formed on a first side relative to a base. The first angle, the second angle, the third angle, and the fourth angle are defined relative to a common axis parallel to the radial plane.

The proximal end is configured to couple to a source of electrosurgical energy via first and second channels extending along a length of the housing to the distal end thereof. The distal end includes a reflector having a dielectric load operably coupled thereto and configured to receive at least a portion of the first conductor therein. In a first mode of operation, electrosurgical energy is transmitted to the first channel and reflected from the reflector to electrosurgically treat tissue. The reflector is configured to receive at least a portion of the second channel therein. In a second mode of operation, electrosurgical energy is transmitted to the second channel to dissect tissue.
