A portable electronic device for instant messaging is disclosed. One aspect of the invention involves a graphical user interface (GUI) on a portable electronic device with a touch screen display. The GUI has a set of messages exchanged between a user of the device and another person. The set of messages are displayed in a chronological order. In response to detecting a scrolling gesture comprising a substantially vertical movement of a user contact with the touch screen display, the display of messages are scrolled in accordance with a direction of the scrolling gesture. The detecting of the scrolling gesture is substantially independent of a horizontal position of the user contact with the touch screen display.

Various embodiments disclosed herein provide for a system for managing and adding contacts. A first mobile device can display an image that can be recorded by a second mobile device. Similarly, the first mobile device can record an image displayed by the second mobile device. The image data from each mobile device can be transmitted to a cloud based contact management system, which can match the images to contact information associated with each mobile device. The contact management system can then push the contact details of each mobile device to the other mobile device, and/or link social media accounts associated with each mobile device. The contact management system can also store connection records that represent an ongoing authorization to push contact information changes from each user to the other, respectively.

Displaying a map in a mobile communication device. Geographic coordinate information for a location of an address in a contact is determined. A user context for the mobile communications device is also determined. A request for a table of contents of available map data without the map data with the geographic coordinate information of the location as input is sent and the table of contents of available map data is received. A subset of map data comprising less data than is listed in the table of contents for the location corresponding to the geographic coordinate information is selected based on the table of contents of available map data and the user context. The subset of the map data is requested and the map with the subset of the map data is caused to be rendered in the display.

A method and system for presenting promotional content to a user of a communication device involves receiving information from a communication device, where the information relates to the communication device, and identifying a result relating to the information that is capable of being presented in a plurality of formats on the communication device, and dynamically selecting a format for the result from among the plurality of formats, and presenting the result in the selected format for display by the communication device.

A method includes: receiving, by a first terminal, first input, where the first input is used to instruct the first terminal to display a first screen that includes a profile picture of a first user, and the first user is an owner of the first terminal or a contact saved on the first terminal; and searching, by the first terminal in response to the first input, for a profile picture of the first user and that corresponds to current scenario information of the first user; and displaying, by the first terminal in response to the first input, the first screen that includes a first profile picture.

A method includes: receiving, by a first terminal, first input, where the first input is used to instruct the first terminal to display a first screen that includes a profile picture of a first user, and the first user is an owner of the first terminal or a contact saved on the first terminal; and searching, by the first terminal in response to the first input, for a profile picture of the first user and that corresponds to current scenario information of the first user; and displaying, by the first terminal in response to the first input, the first screen that includes a first profile picture.

Inter-application navigation apparatuses, systems, and methods are disclosed. An exemplary method includes a computing system accessing a plurality of applications, generating an application access history specifying an order by which the applications are accessed by the computing system, and displaying an inter-application navigation user interface including a plurality of user-selectable graphical objects representing the plurality of applications accessed by the mobile phone device, the user-selectable graphical objects arranged in a slideable list within the inter-application navigation user interface based on the application access history. The plurality of applications represented by the plurality of user-selectable graphical objects in the inter-application navigation user interface includes an application being executed by the computing system and an application not being executed by the computing system when the inter-application navigation user interface is displayed. Corresponding apparatuses, systems, and methods are also disclosed.

An electronic communications device including a transceiver, a touch screen display, and an electronic processor and a method for controlling same. The method includes generating, with the electronic processor, a graphical user interface including a soft push-to-talk button and a call hang time indicator, indicating visually a call hang time, in proximity to the soft push-to-talk button. The method also includes displaying the graphical user interface on the touch screen display, receiving, from the touch screen display, a first input selecting the soft push-to-talk button, and, in response to receiving the first input, establishing a push-to-talk channel via the transceiver.

There is provided a computerized method for establishing a communication session with at least one contact based on a cross display gesture, comprising: displaying an array of contacts at a first location on a display of an interactive user interface on a screen of a client terminal; displaying an array of applications at a second location on the display of the interactive user interface, the first and second locations being located on opposite sides of the screen separated by an interactive region of the interactive user interface; identifying a cross display gesture manually performed by the user, the cross display gesture connecting a certain contact of the array of contacts with a certain application of the array of applications while crossing some of the interactive region; and establishing a communication session between the user and the certain contact activated by the certain application.
