20220268990 · 2022-08-25 ·

The present disclosure relates to a fiber and a laser probe assembly with a probe tip that houses the fiber. In certain aspects, the fiber includes a core, an outer cladding surrounding the core, and an end face at a proximal and/or distal end of the fiber. The core is configured to transmit a laser light beam while the core and the outer cladding are both configured to transmit an illumination light. In certain aspects, a surface area of the end face corresponding to a cross-section of at least the outer cladding is treated with a roughening or polishing process to modulate an illumination light output angle of the fiber. Using a fiber that is configured to transmit a laser light beam as well as a wide-angle illumination light allows for a more compact fiber and probe tip, allowing for medical procedures that require a narrower probe.

Device includes a low cost, single use system enclosed and sterilized including laser source and with the fiber attached in a sterile tube. Another embodiment comprises hermetically sealed laser unit with simple connection system to a properly shaped fiber optic, after joining, unit comprises a hand piece and fiber for direct insertion to treat target tissue. Laser handle is aseptically packaged. In other embodiments, fiber is proximally terminated in solid funnel-shaped end to provide unique directional keyed junction with laser module. In another embodiment, unit includes fiber proximally joined to it, where a laser module can be added away from the fiber end, so that laser does not need to be sterilized but entire unit is safe for medical use in sterile fields. Enclosure also serves as a grip for pulling and/or manipulating device. In another preferred embodiment, laser unit is attached to a rigid delivery system for laparoscopic procedures.

PROCESS AND SYSTEM FOR REDUCING LASER DAMAGE TO SURGICAL INSTRUMENTS

Optical fibers used to deliver laser energy inside the body are often twisted and bent when passed through tortuous routes in accessing the target tissue or pathology, e.g. during the ureteroscopic laser lithotripsy. When an irregular laser output that is produced at the start of the lasing process is channeled through a fiber that is bent at or near the bend limit, fail safe polymer claddings are damaged and can no longer contain even regular laser output in tight deflection. A common resulting fiber failure, known as ‘fiber burn through’, results in injuries to patients and is a major cause of damage to ureteroscopes. Discussed are the systems and methodologies providing a solution to such premature fiber failure.

Probes having fiber taper and fluid collection channel for ophthalmic laser treatment

A treatment probe for treating an eye of a patient includes an elongate body that defines a handle and a treatment fiber that is housed within the elongate body. The treatment fiber is configured to deliver treatment light energy to the eye. A contact member is disposed on an end of the elongate body. The contact member has a contact surface for positioning on a surface of the eye, two side edges that are positioned on opposite sides of the contact surface, and a fluid channel. The contact surface conforms to the shape of the eye's sclera and the two side edges are shaped to direct fluid that is present on the surface of the eye toward the fluid channel when the contact member is moved laterally across the surface of the eye. The fluid aggregates within the fluid channel and contacts a distal end of the treatment fiber.

A laser device for dermocosmetic, medical, or aesthetic treatments, comprising: A) a laser system comprising a lamp-pumped source; B) an optical fibre transporting the laser beam produced by said source; C) a handpiece or a scanner connected to said optical fibre, comprising a lens and mirror system projecting the image of the laser beam onto the area to be treated; characterized in that said optical fibre has a rectangular section and said image is rectangular. A method of dermocosmetic laser treatment characterized by rectangular laser spots is also claimed. It is a further object of the present invention a tracing kit, which allows the marking of a surface area, preferably of biological tissue, with a fluorescent or photosensitive substance invisible to light. Such an invisible and fluorescent or photosensitive substance absorbs the electromagnetic radiation with the proper wavelength emitted by the illuminator and reflects it in the visible spectrum.

Methods, devices, and support structures for assembling optical fibers in catheter tips

Described herein are methods, devices, and support structures for assembling optical fibers in catheter tips and facilitating alignment and structural support. A method for assembling a plurality of optical fibers and lenses in a support structure for an ablation catheter includes providing a support structure with a proximal end, a body, and a distal end, wherein the distal end includes a plurality of alignment orifices or slits. A plurality of optical fibers are threaded through the alignment orifices or slits, such that each optical fiber is threaded through a corresponding alignment orifice or slit. An adhesive material is applied at each alignment orifice or slit to secure the optical fibers, and the plurality of optical fibers are then cleaved at the distal end to remove portions of the fibers extending out of the distal end. Finally, a lens is attached to each of the ends of the plurality of optical fibers.

A protective ferrule for an end-firing optical fiber arrangement combines a spherical or rounded shape with a planar end. The combination of the spherical or rounded shape and planar end provides protection for the working channel of an endoscope or catheter through which the fiber is inserted while confining and minimizing erosion of the active surface area of the fiber. The protective ferrule of may be fitted to the end of the optical fiber by the steps of heating the ferrule to expand an inside diameter so that it fits over the end of the fiber, with subsequent cooling of the ferrule causing it to contract and create a compression fit.
