Various embodiments provide a dual use remote-control device. In one embodiment, a dual use remote-control device may include a first set of input controls such as buttons positioned on a top side of the housing, a second set of input controls positioned on a bottom side of the housing including a QWERTY keyboard and an optical sensor to remotely control movement of a cursor on a display by the optical sensor detecting movement of a user's finger across the optical sensor or movement of the optical sensor across an object such as a table, arm of a chair or user's lap. In one embodiment, a menu is semi-transparently overlaid upon a portion of a video being shown on a television coupled to a programmable multimedia controller. A method, system, and related device for operating a display device are disclosed. The method includes: a control device transmitting the directional light to the display device when detecting a key thereof is pressed, and transmitting the collected intensity data of the first reflected light and the key information to a light tracking system; the light tracking system matching a corresponding coordinate position according to the received intensity data of the first reflected light and the known current distance between the control device and the display device, from the preconfigured reflected light intensity corresponding to the distances between the control device and the coordinate positions of various directional points on display device at the distance, then executing a corresponding operation on an area of the display device corresponding to the coordinate position in conjunction with the key information, and reflecting an operation result on the display device.

Provided is a control apparatus including a key input interface including a plurality of keys, a communication interface configured to communicate with an electronic device, a memory storing store one or more instructions, and a processor configured to execute the one or more instructions stored in the memory to detect whether a power of the electronic device is turned on or turned off, and control the control apparatus to operate in a first mode, based on detecting that the power of the electronic device is turned off, wherein the operating in the first mode includes operating a pre-determined first key from among the plurality of keys in an interrupt mode, and not operating a second key other than the first key from among the plurality of keys.

Methods, systems, and a remote control for sending emergency alert requests are disclosed. The methods and systems comprise receiving an emergency alert request from a user via a set-top box at a subscriber location. The emergency alert request is received from a remote control. A medical alert message is sent by the set-top box to a processing device, based on the received medical alert request, via a first network. The processing device sends an emergency alert instruction to provide emergency assistance to the subscriber location to an emergency assistance service provider, via a second network, based, at least in part, on the message. A request to provide medical assistance to the subscriber location may be sent to a medical assistance service provider, who may be a third party. Emergency alert requests for the police or fire department may be sent to a 9-1-1 service.

A display device according to an embodiment includes: a display, a communication interface comprising communication circuitry configured to communicate with at least one of a first control device including a first key and a second control device including the first key, and at least one processor, individually and/or collectively, configured to execute at least one instruction to cause the display device to: receive a first control signal corresponding to the first key, perform a first operation to output a first full screen by executing the first control signal based on the first control signal being received from the first control device while first content is being played, and perform a second operation different from the first operation to output a second full screen different from the first full screen based on the first control signal being received from the second control device while the first content is being played.
