SIDE-FIRING FIBER DELIVERY DEVICE WITH ACTIVE COOLING CAP
A medical laser system and related methods of utilizing cooling within and around an optical fiber tip to prevent premature failure of the optical fiber. The optical fiber is surrounded by protective jacket assembly including a body tube assembly and a tip cap assembly. The body tube assembly includes an internal fiber jacket and an external body tube with a body tube channel defined therebetween. The tip cap assembly includes an inner cap member and an outer cap member defining a cap irrigation channel therebetween. Together, the cap irrigation channel and body tube channel cooperatively define an internal irrigation channel. The optical fiber can be delivered to a treatment location through a cystoscope. Saline is directed through an external irrigation channel between the cystoscope and the protective jacket assembly as well as the internal irrigation channel to cool the fiber tip and prevent overheating and failure of the optical fiber.
Steerable laser probe
A steerable laser probe may include a handle having a handle distal end and a handle proximal end, an auto-fixing actuation control, a flexible housing tube having a flexible housing tube distal end and a flexible housing tube proximal end, a first flexible housing tube portion having a first stiffness, and an optic fiber disposed within an inner bore of the handle and the flexible housing tube. An actuation of the auto-fixing actuation control may gradually curve the flexible housing tube. A gradual curving of the flexible housing tube may gradually curve the optic fiber.
SOFT TISSUE SELECTIVE ABLATION SURGICAL SYSTEMS
A laser can produce pulses of light energy for tissue-type selective ejection of a volume of the target tissue, and the energy can be delivered to a treatment site through a waveguide, such as a fiber optic waveguide. The incident laser energy can be absorbed within a volume of the target tissue with a tissue penetration depth and pulse direction such that the propagation of the energy from the tissue volume is inhibited and such that the target tissue within the volume reaches the spinodal threshold of decomposition and ejects the volume, for example without substantial damage to tissue adjacent the ejected volume. The pulses are set to be tissue selective.
DEVICE AND METHOD OF ABLATIVE CUTTING WITH HELICAL TIP
Catheter devices for ablation and removal of occlusions from blood vessels and methods of using the same are provided. Catheter devices are useful to ablate, cut, dislodge, and otherwise remove occlusions within a blood vessel that may limit or prevent proper circulation. Distal features of the catheter devices comprise arrangements of laser ablative or mechanical cutting features that generally provide enhanced surface areas and cutting functions. Spiral or helical arrangements are provided to aid in cutting operations.
APPARATUS AND METHOD FOR IMPROVED OPTICAL FIBER TRANSMISSION
An optical fiber assembly includes a central optical fiber core having a longitudinal axis surrounded by a cladding layer along the longitudinal axis, a distal end portion and a proximal end portion; it further comprises a layer of a material at least partially surrounding the cladding layer; the layer of material may be light-sensitive; and, at least two electrodes may be embedded at least partially along the longitudinal axis within the layer of light-sensitive material. The light-sensitive material may be a photoresist material, and the photoresist material characteristics change proportional to the amount of light impinging on the photoresist material. These characteristics may include one or more of electrical resistance changes or voltage changes.
FLUID COOLED OPTICAL FIBER
Fluid cooled optical fibers are disclosed. An exemplary fiber comprises a fiber body including a distal end, an inner cap surrounding said distal end, an outer cap surrounding said inner cap, and a tube attached to said outer cap. The tube and outer cap may define a first flow channel, the outer and inner caps may define a second flow channel, and the outer cap may including one or openings for placing the first flow channel in communication with the second flow channel. Associated systems also are disclosed.
STEERABLE LASER PROBE
A steerable laser probe may include an actuation structure, a nosecone fixed to the actuation structure by one or more links and one or more link pins, a housing tube having a first housing tube portion with a first stiffness and a second housing tube portion with a second stiffness, and an optic fiber disposed in the housing tube and the actuation structure. A compression of the actuation structure may be configured to gradually curve the housing tube and the optic fiber. A decompression of the actuation structure may be configured to gradually straighten the housing tube and the optic fiber.

Diffusing apparatus for laser therapy treatment
The present invention provides devices and methods of manufacture related to transmitting light to a target site for diffusion Techniques are provided which allow accurate control of the illumination profile with a diffuser tip design which is easily producible, relatively inexpensive, and provides variations to obtain desired illumination profiles. This is achieved by using at least two light scattering mediums having a shape defined by an insert. The dimensions, light scattering properties, and number of such light scattering mediums may be selected individually or collectively to selectively control the illumination profile. In addition, the insert allows for other beneficial design features, such as a reduced heat retention, easily controlled and refined light scattering medium interfaces, and a smaller cross-sectional diameter than is typically achievable with other techniques. The resulting light transmission and diffusion apparatus is operable with a high efficiency, highly predictable illumination profile, and ease of use.
