A system and method for enabling set up of a controlling device capable of controlling a plurality of appliances, via an interactive instruction set and associated programming. The programming is accessible by a STB or other controllable appliance and is configured to appropriately display interactive instructions and prompts to a user during a user initiated set up procedure for configuration of another controllable device (e.g., DVD, VCR, DVR, etc) available to the user.

A method for controlling the operation of a plurality of consumer electronic devices by displaying a plurality of broadcast channel identifiers each corresponding to a broadcast channel in a display of a controlling device adapted to command at least channel tuning operations of the plurality of consumer electronic devices. Input is accepted into the controlling device that functions to designate one of the plurality of broadcast channel identifiers and the controlling device uses the designation of the one of the plurality of broadcast channel identifiers to cause a transmission of a wireless signal from the controlling device to a one of the plurality of consumer electronic devices to thereby cause the one of the plurality of consumer electronic devices to tune to the broadcast channel corresponding to the designated one of the plurality of broadcast channel identifiers. A condition associated with at least one of the controlling device and the designated one of the plurality of broadcast channel identifiers functions to determine the one of the plurality of consumer electronic devices to which the wireless signal is transmitted.

A video output apparatus includes an operation device that outputs an operation signal according to an operation, an operation signal processor that receives the operation signal and executes a process, and a storage that stores a plurality of programs and an association between the operation signal and any of the plurality of programs. The operation device includes a definition operation part to which a function achieved by any of the plurality of programs can be allocated, and the plurality of programs includes a function allocation setting program for outputting an operation image for allocating the function to the definition operation part. The storage stores, as an initial association, an association between an operation signal due to an operation on the definition operation part and the function allocation setting program. Upon receipt of the operation signal output from the operation device due to the operation on the definition operation part, the operation signal processor executes the function allocation setting program based on the initial association and outputs the operation image.

A consumer electronic device tracks the current channel to which the electronic consumer device is tuned. The consumer electronic device determines an amount of time that the current channel remains unchanged. Based at least in part on this amount of time, the consumer electronic device determines whether the current channel should be stored as a favorite channel. When the consumer electronic device subsequently receives a favorite channel command, the consumer electronic device is caused to tune to the favorite channel that is currently stored in memory. Changing user preferences are thus automatically accommodated without manual intervention, resulting in an effortless user interface.

A configurable input element of a controlling device is configured by using a data representative of an over-the-top (OTT) media app determined to be installed on an OTT device and a data representative of the OTT device to identify at least one command that is required to be transmitted to cause the OTT device to launch the OTT media app. The at least one command is provisioned to the controlling device and assigned to the configurable input element. When the input element is subsequently activated, the controlling device will transmit the at least one command to cause the OTT device to launch the OTT media app.

Systems and methods for mapping keys on a remote control device to digital content items are disclosed. An algorithm is trained, based on user's consumption pattern, to determine whether a digital content item would be relevant to the user. If the digital content item matches the consumption pattern, then a key is automatically mapped, and if it does not, then a notification that includes a mapping suggestion is generated and mapped upon approval. A mapping table is updated to store only valid mappings. An input of a key results in quick display of the mapped digital content item from where it was previously exited.

A key can be mapped to a single or multiple digital content items. If similarities are detected between multiple digital content items, then they may both be mapped to the same key.

Systems and methods are described for adapting a second user input device to resemble a first user input device while preserving new functionalities not available in the first user input device. The systems and methods may identify, based on identifiers of the first and second user input devices, a first and second set of device functionalities provided by the devices. The systems and methods may compare the sets of device functionalities to determine a set of common device functionalities and, in response, modify the display of an input of the second user input device to correspond to visual attributes of an input of the first user input device.
