Example apparatus disclosed herein are to determine a location of a portable device based on location data collected by the portable device, determine whether a person is within a threshold distance of the portable device based on proximity data collected by the portable device, and, when the person is determined to be within the threshold distance of the portable device: (i) infer at least one of a presence or an absence of the person in a media exposure environment based on the location of the portable device, (ii) determine a confidence level that the person corresponds to a member of the panelist household, and (iii) determine an accuracy of presence information collected by a people meter based on the confidence level and the inference of the at least one of the presence or the absence of the person, the people meter different than the portable device.

REGENERATING AN INTERACTIVE PAGE BASED ON CURRENT USER INTERACTION

In various embodiments, an optimization engine regenerates items included in an interactive page while the user is interacting with the interactive page. In operation, an optimization engine displays a portion of the interactive page during a viewing session. Subsequently, the optimization engine computes a probability distribution for the viewing session over a set of interests based on model parameters and operations performed by the user during the viewing session. The optimization engine then regenerates items that are included in a second portion of the interactive page based on the probability distribution for the viewing session. The optimization engine displays a least a part of the resulting regenerated interactive page. Advantageously, by regenerating items included in the interactive page based on operations performed by the user during the viewing session, the optimization engine reduces the time required for the user to view an item that piques an interest.

Sensing interfaces associated with a home entertainment system are used to automate a system response to events which occur in a viewing area associated with the home entertainment system. Data derived from such sensing interfaces may also be used to enhance the response readiness of one or more system components. Still further, user presence data derived from such sensing interfaces may be used to capture and report user viewing habits and/or preferences.

Request for information related to broadcast network content

A request for information (RFI) system is provided for use in communications networks including broadcast networks and the internet. In one implementation, a viewer of a cable television network enters an RFI input (1) to a digital set top box using a user remote. Based on this RFI input, the digital set top box transmits a data request (2) to an RFI data center. The RFI data center also receives asset data (3) from an asset database so as to associate the RFI input (1) with a particular asset. An RFI request (4) can then be transmitted to the appropriate asset provider. The asset provider can then provide a report such package of assets or follow-on information (5) back to the RFI data center. The RFI data center may then, in turn, provide the package of assets or follow-on information to a user data terminal, for example, of the cable television network viewer, via access through a web-portal or e-mail (6). The digital set top box may also record inputs from the user to verify consumption of assets and track data requests. Using this information, the RFI data center or an RFI platform may credit value to a rewards account established for the network user based on the user's verified consumption of assets and/or data requests. Further, the RFI data center or RFI platform may be used to collect consumer behavior information, including purchasing decisions made by the user after consumption of assets, and correlate the consumer behavior information with the user's verified asset consumption.

Dynamic adjustment of electronic program guide displays based on viewer preferences for minimizing navigation in VOD program selection

Items of video content offered for viewing on a video-on-demand (VOD) platform of a digital TV service provider are each assigned a respective title and hierarchical address corresponding to hierarchically-arranged categories and subcategories within which the title for the video content is to be categorized. The title is listed in a location of an electronic program guide (EPG) using the same categories and subcategories as its hierarchical address. Any TV subscriber can access the EPG and navigate through its categories and subcategories to find a title for viewing on the TV. The EPG dynamically adjust its display listings of each level of categories, subcategories, and titles in order to minimize the number of remote control keypresses needed for a viewer to navigate to a title of interest. In one basic form, the EPG display is reordered by listing more frequently visited categories or subcategories first, and other less frequently visited categories or subcategories lower on the listing or out-of-sight on another page of the display.

Method and System for Selective broadcasting of Instructions or Media Content to Targeted Electronic Devices Using a Modular Format

A distributive instructions transmission system for the performing a task the can be generated by request of a user. A user initiates the process by transmitting a request for instructions for the execution of a chosen task to a remote processing center. The indicated task request will be acted upon by one several options. The processing center immediately generate instructions that will result in the execution of the task, check to see if the task is already requested by other users or take steps to make possible execution of the task. Execution of the requested task can involve the generation of an enhance subset of user instructions that is transmitted to one or many different processors. If needed the task can be divided into smaller task (sub-segments). If more than one process is involved, the processor can be located in a single site, or be remote to one another. If more than one processor is involved in the task, each processor will get sub-set of instructions for each sub-segment of the task.

METHODS AND SYSTEMS TO METER MEDIA CONTENT PRESENTED ON A WIRELESS COMMUNICATION DEVICE

An example apparatus to monitor media that is presented via a mobile device includes: an application monitor to determine when media presentation software is being executed by the mobile device; and a metering information collector to collect at least one of a signature or a code of the media presented by the media presentation software based on the media presentation software being executed by the mobile device.

Ergonomic man-machine interface incorporating adaptive pattern recognition based control system

An adaptive interface for a programmable system, for predicting a desired user function, based on user history, as well as machine internal status and context. The apparatus receives an input from the user and other data. A predicted input is presented for confirmation by the user, and the predictive mechanism is updated based on this feedback. Also provided is a pattern recognition system for a multimedia device, wherein a user input is matched to a video stream on a conceptual basis, allowing inexact programming of a multimedia device. The system analyzes a data stream for correspondence with a data pattern for processing and storage. The data stream is subjected to adaptive pattern recognition to extract features of interest to provide a highly compressed representation which may be efficiently processed to determine correspondence. Applications of the interface and system include a VCR, medical device, vehicle control system, audio device, environmental control system, securities trading terminal, and smart house. The system optionally includes an actuator for effecting the environment of operation, allowing closed-loop feedback operation and automated learning.

METHOD FOR DYNAMICALLY MANAGING CONENT DELIVERY

Methods and systems are provided for bitrate adaptation of a video asset to be streamed to a client device for playback. The method includes selecting a representation from a manifest which expresses a set of representations available for each chunk of the video asset and generating a dynamic manifest for the video asset in which the representation selected for the at least one chunk is recommended for streaming to the client device. The selection of the representation recommended for the chunk may be based on at least one of historic viewing behavior of previous viewers of the chunk, content analysis information for the chunk, a level of available network bandwidth, a level of available network storage, and data rate utilization information of network resources including current, average, peak, and minimum data rate of network resources.
