A chuck mechanism for a dental handpiece holds a columnar rotary tool for dental care rotatably with an annular rotor of the dental handpiece. The columnar rotor tool is concentrically detachable to the annular rotor which is rotatably attached to a head part of the dental handpiece. The chuck mechanism has an annular chucking member with a cylindrical base part into which the annular rotor is integrally fitted and an elastic chucking piece having a chucking pawl for engaging with a locking groove formed at a base end of the rotary tool. The chuck mechanism enables the rotary tool to be easily removed from the annular rotor by elastically deforming the elastic chucking piece against elastic force of the elastic chucking piece to disengage the chucking pawl from the locking groove.

A chuck assembly for a dental handpiece includes a hollow cylindrical tube portion having a first internal bore, and a chuck portion having a second bore. The chuck portion is supported within the first bore co-rotational with the tube portion about a common axis. The chuck portion has an annular body portion defining the second bore for supporting a cylindrical tool therein. A drive element comprising a drive pin inserted in a first end of the tube portion traverses the first internal bore at a first end of the tube portion. The drive pin cooperates with a distal end of a rotary tool insertable into the second bore to transfer torque to the tool. The tool has an elongated body portion having a driven portion and a working portion. The driven portion includes a shank portion with channels for receiving the drive pin.

Two or more clamping portions are disposed on the connecting member, and a distance between the clamping portions is changeable due to a control over the clamping portions. The controlling member corresponds to the connecting member and is abutted against the clamping portions. The controlling member can be moved relative to the clamping portions to form the control over the clamping portions so as to allow the clamping portions to clamp or to release the dental tool. A tungsten carbide coating layer is disposed on a contact surface of the controlling member, contact surfaces of the clamping portions, or both.

A selective angular coupling mechanism exerting an angular holding torque between the clamp and the guide bush or respectively the drive shaft, the value of which being inferior to that corresponding to the slip threshold between the said clamp and the drilling tool.
