Method and apparatus for a search-enabled remote control device
A search-enabled remote control device to facilitate viewers' ability to search through programming and/or content options and view results. In one embodiment, a viewer is able to use a traditional remote control interface to navigate through menus or selections and to display search results on screen. In another embodiment, a viewer's watching behavior and/or searching habits are tracked by the search-enabled remote control and used to develop a viewer profile, which may in turn be used to target advertisements, information and/or future programming options.
Systems and methods for saving and restoring scenes in a multimedia system
Systems and methods for saving and restoring scenes in a multimedia system with minimal configuration are provided. The techniques of the present invention can allow the states of the components in the multimedia system to be captured in a scene. Once the scene has been saved, the scene can be restored at a later time. A remote control system for recommending scenes by comparing states of components in the current scene with states of components in saved scenes is also provided. The remote control system can also recommend scenes based on usage patterns. Moreover, the remote control system can allow users to designate one or more saved scenes as favorite scenes.

The invention is directed to systems, methods and computer program products for configuring a user interface of a portable mobile communication device. An exemplary method includes determining, by at least one of the portable mobile communication device or an electronic device in communication with the portable mobile communication device, a direction associated with a user's gaze. Additionally, the method includes at least one of: in response to determining the direction associated with the user's gaze is at least partially towards a display associated with the electronic device, configuring the portable mobile communication display to function as a touch pad that enables interaction with a user interface displayed on the electronic device; or in response to determining the direction associated with the user's gaze is at least partially towards a display associated with the portable mobile communication device, configuring the portable mobile communication device display to display a user interface.

A media system for generating a user profile by analyzing force input to a remote controller and providing a personalized service according to the generated user profile and a method for providing the personalized service in the same are disclosed. A computer processing device (server) in the media system comprises an information collection unit configured to collect information about a force input applied to a remote controller during a predetermined period of time and a profiling unit configured to generate at least one user profile according to the collected information. Here, the force input means an input applied to the remote controller with higher pressure or wider area than pressure or an area of a normal input.

A method for receiving a device capability associated with a service guide is described. The method may include (a) receiving a content fragment within said service guide; (b) receiving capabilities syntax element within said content fragment that indicates required capabilities for decoding and presenting signaled content; (c) wherein said capabilities syntax element includes: (i) an element capability code (ccode) that represents a certain capability or capability group defined by 1 to 4 hexadecimal digits (1*4HEXDIG); (ii) an element capability string code (capability_string_code) having a first operand (ubyte) that represents a registry identified by capability category code and a second operand (1*utf8) that specifies a capability or capability group within said registry, where said first operand (ubyte) is defined as 1 to 3 digits (1*3DIGIT) and said utf8 is defined as one or more UTF-8 characters (*(UTF8-char)); (d) decoding said service guide.

System and method for managing playback of streaming digital content
One embodiment of the present invention sets forth a technique for managing playback of digital content on two or more different playback devices. A playback device designated as a controller is associated with a playback device designated as a playback target. Association is implemented via a local network discovery protocol. The controller issues commands to the target, which then streams digital content directly from a content server. The controller is able to separately stream related digital content for independent, but synchronized playback. Server mediated operations, such as device activation and application installation, are advantageously enabled by explicit association between the controller and the target.
