An improved prosthetic device with a vacuum system for maintaining a negative pressure seal between the socket and the residual limb. The vacuum system includes a vacuum surge chamber which maintains seal vacuum and increases the time between recharging a Li ion battery, allowing the battery to be recharged-up to 500 times. The system is small, lightweight, and concealable within the prosthetic device so that it neither impedes use of the device nor detracts from a cosmetically accurate limb.

The invention relates to a gripping device, such as an automated hand, comprising a plurality of metacarpal members, each metacarpal member having a first end attached to a support frame via a universal joint and having a second end attached to a gripping member, wherein the metacarpal members are able to pivot upwardly, downwardly and laterally. Where adjacent metacarpal members together form a palm of the hand, the ability of the metacarpal members to move up, down and laterally helps the palm to grip an object and also helps the palm to withstand at least some forces from above, below and from the side.

A body-powered articulated prosthetic hand where each of the segments of the digits, the palmer plate, the thumb pivot plate and the wrist are individually sizeable. This allows for both a proportionately scalable hand as well as individual customization of geometric configurations tailored to specific use patterns. The hand is crushable since it has flexible and pivotable connections between digits along the length and width of the hand. It has a hollow member construction that imparts a strong lightweight design. It is modular so individual parts can be replaced for quick repair. From an aesthetics point, it is visually pleasing and can be offered in different colors, and with custom digit sleeves for specific applications. Fingers can be operated individually or in groups via pairs of cables which allow operation in either voluntary open or voluntary closed modes of control. The flexible construction allows gripping of irregularly shaped objects and deforms before failing giving indication of overload prior to failure.

The variable gain impedance controller adjusts its control on the apparatus based on the variable torque gain and the indicated torque so as to a) increase the joint resistance to motion when the signal received from the sensor input indicates an interaction between the apparatus and the ground and b) decrease the joint resistance to motion when the signal received from the sensor input indicates an absence of interaction between the apparatus and the ground.

A prosthetic ankle includes a pair of prosthetic members movably coupled together to allow movement of the pair of prosthetic members with respect to one another. A hydraulic actuator or damper including hydraulic fluid in a hydraulic chamber is coupled to one of the pair of prosthetic members. A hydraulic piston is movably disposed in the hydraulic chamber and coupled to another of the pair of prosthetic members. A hydraulic flow channel is fluidly coupled between opposite sides of the chamber to allow hydraulic fluid to move between the opposite sides of the chamber as the hydraulic piston moves therein. A voice coil valve is coupled to the hydraulic flow channel to vary resistance to flow of hydraulic fluid through the flow channel, and thus movement of the piston in the chamber, and thus influencing a rate of movement of the pair of prosthetic members with respect to one another.

A server of a gait data management system includes: an obtaining unit that obtains a first sensor value obtained when a walker walks with assistance from a walking assistance device; an accumulating unit that accumulates the first sensor value, and the walking assistance device includes: an actuator that drives a joint; a storage unit that stores a walk algorithm that is for determining a drive level of the actuator and is generated through statistical processing on a gait value indicating walking characteristics and calculated from the first sensor value accumulated in the accumulating unit; a sensor that obtains a second sensor value obtained when the walker walks with assistance from the walking assistance device; a control unit that determines the drive level of the actuator according to the second sensor value using the walk algorithm; and a transmitting unit that transmits the second sensor value to the server.

METHOD FOR OPERATING AN ORTHOPEDIC DEVICE AND CORRESPONDING ORTHOPEDIC DEVICE

The invention relates to a method for operating an orthopedic device which supports or replaces a first body part of a wearer and has at least one controllable actuator, wherein the method includes a) determining a chronological profile of at least one parameter, which allows for a conclusion to be made regarding a movement status of the wearer, from measurement values of at least one sensor; b) detecting the movement status from the at least one determined chronological profile; and c) controlling the at least one controllable actuator depending on the identified movement status, wherein at least the chronological profile of at least one parameter of a second body part of the wearer is also used to identify the movement status.
