At least one anatomical support member which comprises at least one layer of laminar sheeting of radiolucent material. At least one articulating joint unit is in engagement with the at least one of anatomical support member. The at least one articulating joint unit comprise at least one layer of laminar sheeting of radiolucent material with a primarily non-metallic connector at a central pivot point. The at least one articulating joint unit is positionable in at least a vertical and horizontal orientations enabling positioning of portions of an anatomy in three dimensions along x, y, and z axes. At least one primarily non-metallic locking member is configured to lock the at least one articulating joint unit at selectable position(s), in which a load bearing stress is spread across lengths of the laminar sheeting to mitigate a susceptibility to stress fractures and load failure.

Patient support apparatus with stabilization

A patient support apparatus includes a base, a seat supported by the base and a backrest pivotable between an upright position and a reclined position. In one embodiment, a backrest support member is coupled to the backrest and is adapted to move between a stowed position in which the backrest support member does not support the backrest and a deployed position in which the backrest support member does support the backrest. Movement to the deployed position occurs in response to activation of an emergency control. In other embodiments, the base includes a portion that moves into an extended position underneath the backrest when the backrest is in the reclined position. Movement of the base portion to the extended position also occurs in response to activation of an emergency control.

The joint is positionable in at least a vertical and horizontal orientations enabling smooth positioning of portions of an anatomy in three dimensions such that translational and/or rotational centrepoints in its x, y and z axes substantially coincide. The joint is preferably made of by material(s) that do not cause substantial radiographic or nuclear imaging artifacts when medically imaged thereby.

PATIENT POSITIONING SUPPORT STRUCTURE WITH TRUNK TRANSLATOR

A patient support structure includes a pair of independently height-adjustable supports, each connected to a patient support. The supports may be independently raised, lowered, rolled or tilted about a longitudinal axis, laterally shifted and angled upwardly or downwardly. Position sensors are provided to sense all of the foregoing movements. The sensors communicate data to a computer for coordinated adjustment and maintenance of the inboard ends of the patient supports in an approximated position during such movements. A longitudinal translator provides for compensation in the length of the structure when the supports are angled upwardly or downwardly. A patient trunk translator provides coordinated translational movement of the patient's upper body along the respective patient support in a caudad or cephalad direction as the patient supports are angled upwardly or downwardly for maintaining proper spinal biomechanics and avoiding undue spinal traction or compression.
