The present invention provides compounds as PPAR agonists and their application, involving a new class of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) gamma receptor agonist, which can inhibit the production of mitochondrial reactive oxygen species, and most of which can readily cross the blood-brain barrier. The present invention also includes pharmaceutical uses of the compounds.

Multiple active component therapeutic formulations are described comprising at least two active agents selected from the group consisting of an isovanillin component, a harmine component, and a curcumin component, stabilized in a self-supporting lipid crystalline formulation for topical application. The formulation maintains the active agents in a stable form during storage and will melt at body temperature when applied to the skin, wherein the lipid crystals melt into a liquid crystalline structure thereby releasing the active agents to the applied area of the skin or tissue to render their therapeutic effect.

Suggested is a composition with stabilized taste and/or odor, comprising (a) at least one acetophenone derivative of formula (I) wherein R.sub.1 stands for hydrogen or methyl, and R.sub.2 stands for hydrogen, hydroxyl or a —OCH.sub.3 group, or a cosmetically pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, and (b) at least one mono- or polyunsaturated C.sub.8-C.sub.22 fatty acid or its monohydric polyhydric C.sub.1-C.sub.18 alkyl alcohols ester. ##STR00001##

The preparation and use of such anti-UV cosmetic compositions may provide anti-UV cosmetic composition having dual protection for the skin: protection against UV rays and limiting the penetration of UV filters into the skin.
