Cutting insert and cutting tool

A cutting tool includes a cutting insert that is held in a holder in a detachable manner. The cutting insert has a substantially regular quadrangular shape in plan view and includes four round corners. The cutting insert is formed of CBN sinter as a whole. The cutting insert includes two principal surfaces that are upper and lower surfaces opposite to each other, and four side surfaces that are arranged so as to connect the principal surfaces to each other. A boundary portion (ridge line portion) between each of the principal surfaces and each of the side surfaces forms a cutting edge. In a central portion of each of the side surfaces of the cutting insert, a groove for absorbing a crack, having a substantially V-shape in cross section, is formed all around the cutting insert so as to be recessed with respect to the side surfaces.

A cutting insert includes an insert body, a rake face on an upper surface of an end portion of the insert body, a cutting edge on a ridge between the rake face and an end surface of the insert body, side cutting edges on ridges between the rake face and side surfaces of the insert body, each connected to both end portions of the cutting edge, and a breaker convex portion on the rake face. The breaker convex portion includes two breaker island portions extending toward the side cutting edge as extending closer to the front cutting edge. Each breaker island portion includes from the front cutting edge side a first raised portion, a descending portion which becomes lower from a top portion of the first raised portion, and a second raised portion which becomes higher, from the descending portion, than the top portion of the first raised portion.

A holder and a cutting tool with the holder including an insertion hole at a front end part thereof, and a cutting insert that includes a cutting edge part and a shank part. The shank part has substantially a rod shape. A part of the shank part is immovably located in the insertion hole. The front end part of the holder includes a first curved surface part that becomes wider from a front end toward a back side when viewed from a side thereof. The first curved surface part includes: a curved line that extends from an edge of an opening of the insertion hole toward the back side; or a straight line that extends from the edge of the opening of the insertion hole and connects to a curved line that extends continuously from the straight line toward the back side without an angular part.

A toolholder and method for use with a cutting insert having a clamping opening, comprising a toolholder body and a clamp pivotably mounted to and contacting the toolholder body and pivotable between a first position in which a protrusion of the clamp is disposed in a position in which it is arranged to be received in the clamping opening in the cutting insert to secure the cutting insert to the toolholder body and a second position in which the protrusion is spaced, relative to the toolholder, upwardly from the first position so that the cutting insert is not secured to the toolholder body by the protrusion. A resilient member is arranged relative to the clamp to urge the clamp to the first position and to resist pivoting of the clamp to the second position. An opening in the clamp may receive a portion of a separate lever.

Method for manufacturing an insert-receiving pocket wall with a compound radius

A method for manufacturing a sidewall support surface of an insert-receiving pocket with a compound radius includes the steps of: 1) tilting a cutting tool at a primary tilt angle with respect to a first plane (x-z); 2) tilting the cutting tool at a secondary tilt angle with respect to a second plane (y-z), the second plane different than the first plane; and 3) rotating the cutting tool about an axis (z-axis) perpendicular to a pocket floor of the insert-receiving pocket while maintaining the first and second tilt angles. A cutting tool including a toolholder with the insert-receiving pocket having a pocket floor and the sidewall support surface formed with a compound radius is also described.
