Twist drill for advanced materials
The present invention is concerned with twist drills for drilling of composite materials such as carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) and glass fibre reinforced plastic (GFRP). The present invention proposes that a twist drill (2) is provided with a variable helix having a defined start and finish helix angle, in combination with primary and secondary relief angles such that the drill (2) is adapted to minimise thrust force, particularly when used for drilling fibre-containing composite materials and especially for hand drilling. Start and finish helix angles of 50 and 10; 50 and 30; and 30 and 10 have been shown to provide excellent cutting performance and exit hole quality. A large secondary chisel edge angle (24) has also been found to contribute to excellent performance with composite materials, including stack machining.
Flexible manufacturing for aircraft structures
A method and apparatus for manufacturing an aircraft structure. A drivable support may be driven from a first location to a second location to bring the drivable support together with at least one other drivable support to form a drivable support system. A structure may be held in a desired position using the drivable support system.
Rotary catheter drive unit containing seal-sets
A method of making a seal-set for a rotary catheter drive unit containing a motor and a seal-set, an output shaft of the motor being power transmittingly connected to a flexible shaft that is rotatably disposed through the seal-set, the seal-set comprising a bearing and an adjacent seal defining a first and a second concentric bores, respectively, the first bore being slightly larger than a diameter of the shaft so that it rotatably and accurately supports the shaft, the second bore being slightly smaller than the diameter so that it seals around the shaft, the bearing aligning the shaft, so that it is concentric with the second bore, by deflecting the shaft to compensate for eccentricity and misalignment of the second bore relative to the output shaft of the motor.
Methods of forming holes in a workpiece and associated systems
Described herein is a first method of forming a hole in a workpiece, having a first surface and a second surface opposite the first surface. The method includes forming a first hole, having a first diameter, in the workpiece by passing a first cutter through the workpiece from the first surface to the second surface. Additionally, the method includes forming a chamfer in the second surface of the workpiece concentric with the first hole using a second cutter. The chamfer has a second diameter larger than the first diameter. The method further includes forming a second hole, having a third diameter larger than the first diameter, in the workpiece concentric with the first hole by passing a third cutter through the workpiece from the first surface to the second surface.
Machining System with Optimal Paths
A method for implementing machining operations for a workpiece. Pre-existing hole locations for temporary fasteners in the workpiece requiring a clamp-up force for performing the machining operations to form holes in the workpiece is identified. A set of the pre-existing hole locations is determined from the pre-existing hole locations that results in an optimal path for performing the machining operations on the workpiece taking into account clamp-up force specifications for the workpiece. The optimal path has a near-minimum distance. An ordered sequence for performing the machining operations to form the holes at hole locations is determined that has the optimal path. Robotic control files that causes robotic devices to perform the machining operations using the optimal path is created. The robotic devices are operated using the robotic control files to form the holes in the ordered sequence using the optimal path that takes into account the clamp-up force specifications.
Precessional-motion bone and dental drilling tools and bone harvesting apparatus
This document provides orthopedic and dental devices and methods for their use. For example, novel bone drills and dental drills are described. The bone and dental drills have at least some centers of mass that are offset from the drills' axis of rotation. Accordingly, the bone and dental drills may rotate and cut using a precessional pattern of motion. The design facilitates bone cutting, chip formation and hauling capacity, irrigation and bone harvesting. In some embodiments, the bone chips are collected in a removable apparatus fixed to the distal portion of the drill, and the collected bone chips can be used for bone grafting.
METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR MACHINING A WORKPIECE
An example method includes performing a machining operation by providing linear movement of a tool along a feed axis relative to a workpiece while superimposing oscillation of the tool onto the feed axis and providing rotation of the tool relative to the workpiece. During an optimization mode, the machining operation is performed on a first workpiece portion while providing the linear movement at an initial feed velocity, and sequentially superimposing the oscillating at a plurality of different frequencies. An optimal oscillation frequency is determined from the plurality of different frequencies which causes the tool to apply less force to the first workpiece portion at the initial feed velocity than others of the frequencies. During a run mode, the machining operation is performed on a second workpiece portion having a same composition as the first workpiece portion while superimposing the oscillation at the optimal oscillation frequency.
Cable drill bit
A method of installing cable through material, for example, concrete, wood, masonry, plastic steel, or the like comprising a drill bit with a distal end having a hollow tip with an attachment mechanism for receiving the cable. The drill bit is drilled through the material, and left in place while the cable is attached to the proximal end of the drill bit. There is no need to remove the drill bit from the aperture or material to attach the cable thereto. After attachment to the drill bit, the cable is inserted through the aperture with the drill bit and removed from the drill bit after it passes through the material so it can be attached to a receiver device.
Methods and apparatus for preparing a hemispherical surface
Methods and apparatus for preparing at least a hemispherical surface with a desired dimension have been disclosed. The method includes at least two steps: a primary cutting mode for mostly reaming a lower portion of the target site, which enveloped area from the pole to intermediate latitude and a finishing cutting mode for reaming either an upper portion or an entire area of the site by less number of times of rotation, respectively. The intermediate latitude locates between the pole and the equator of hemisphere.
Variable angle screws, plates and systems
The present disclosure relates, according to some embodiments, to orthopedic implantable device technology, and more specifically to variable angle implantable devices, systems, and methods.
