OCEAN THERMOCLINE DRIVEN MEMBRANE DISTILLATION PROCESS

Systems and methods using membrane distillation are provided for desalinating water, for example for the production of potable water, to address freshwater requirements. In an aspect the systems and methods do not require applying an external heat source, or the energy cost of the heating source, to heat the feed stream to the membrane. In an aspect, the sensible heat present in surface seawater is used for the heat energy for the warm stream fed to the membrane, and deep seawater is used as the cold/coolant feed to the membrane to provide the needed temperature gradient or differential across the membrane.

The distillation unit includes a heating chamber defining an interior chamber adapted to contain a non-potable liquid for distillation, and a dome-shaped condensing portion having an inner surface and an outer surface, with the condensing portion disposed over the heating chamber such that the heating chamber and the inner surface of the condensing portion are provided in fluid-transfer communication. The distillation unit also includes a pre-heat jacket having a first surface and a second surface and an interior defined therebetween adapted to receive non-potable liquid for distillation therein. The first surface is disposed adjacent the outer surface of the condensing portion, and the pre-heat jacket defines an access entry for introducing non-potable liquid for distillation into the interior of the heating chamber. The distillation unit also includes a trough adjacent for receiving a potable liquid therein.

Self-contained, PV-powered domestic toilet and wastewater treatment system

A wastewater treatment system and method for remediating wastewater and human waste that is self-contained and that has no connection to a municipal wastewater system and no connection to an electrical grid. The domestic toilet and wastewater treatment system can be powered by a photovoltaic panel as a source of electricity. The system includes an electrochemical cell that allows a waste stream to be disinfected in a few hours to a condition where no viable bacterial colonies can be cultured. The system produces a liquid stream that is suitable for system flushing or for uses in which non-potable water is acceptable. The system can generate hydrogen as a product that can be used to generate power. The system can generate nitrate, urea, ammonia and phosphate for use as fertilizer. The disinfected residual organic solids are also completely disinfected for potential use as an organic soil amendment for agriculture.

SYSTEM AND METHOD OF RAIN WATER COLLECTION AND PURIFICATION

A system and method for collecting and purifying rainwater. The system includes a humidifier including a heat exchanger for preheating collected rainwater. The preheated water is output to a heater. The heater heats the water to between about 80 degrees C. and about 100 degrees C. The humidifier also includes a nozzle coupled to an outlet of the heater. The nozzle injects water vapor into the humidifier. The humidifier also includes a fan capable of circulating the water vapor in an inner volume of the humidifier. The water vapor condenses on an outer surface of the heat exchanger. The system also includes a collector for collecting the condensed potable water from the outer surface of the heat exchanger and a delivery system for delivering the potable water.

The present invention relates to a portable liquid purifier for purifying liquid contained in the purifier using an ozone flow that passes through the liquid. The invention comprises a container, an ozone generator built into the base of the container, a blower extending from the ozone generator and provided with blow holes in the lower part of the container, and a standalone power source that does not have to be connected to the network during the operation of the purifier in order to power the ozone generator and the blower. The invention can be used to purify drinks in any location, while camping, hiking, travelling in exotic countries, etc., owing to the bactericidal, viricidal, and fungicidal properties of the ozone, as well as offering the unexpected or additional advantage of performing disinfection in the same container into which the ozone generator is built.

Liquid purification with film heating
10954138 · 2021-03-23 · ·

A purification system can provide for efficient heating of liquid via film heating, which, rather than heating a large volume of liquid, can heat a thin layer of liquid thus reducing the amount of energy required to evaporate the liquid. Film heating can enable evaporation of liquids using less energy than other methods. In addition, when liquids (e.g., seawater) having dissolved solids (e.g., salts) are heated, both the liquid and the solids must be heated. As evaporation occurs, the concentration of solids increases and more energy must be supplied to the liquid in order to cause evaporation. Because purification system can heat only a layer of liquid, less energy is required to heat the solids, which can allow for higher energy efficiencies in purifying liquids. These efficiencies can lead to decreased cost of potable water. Related apparatus, systems, techniques, and articles are also described.
