An extracorporeal blood heating and cooling system that is connectable to an oxygenator of a cardiopulmonary bypass system, the heating and cooling system comprising: a heater-cooler unit; a coolant flow circuit that is configured to pass coolant through the heater-cooler unit and the oxygenator; and a cardioplegia coolant circuit that is configured to pass coolant through the heater-cooler unit and a cardioplegia heat exchanger; wherein when the heating and cooling system is in a purging mode, the coolant flow circuit and the cardioplegia coolant circuit contain temperature-controlled coolant having a trisodium phosphate concentration of about 1-35 millimole/liter; wherein when the heating and cooling system is in a coolant mode, the coolant flow circuit and the cardioplegia coolant circuit contain temperature-controlled coolant having a trisodium phosphate concentration of about 1-10 millimole/liter; and wherein when the heating and cooling system is in the coolant mode or the purging mode, a first and second plurality of coolant conduits within the oxygenator and the cardioplegia heat exchanger are capable of maintaining a trisodium phosphate concentration ratio across the wall of such coolant conduits of at least 100:1, from the interior to the exterior of each coolant conduit. Methods of purging and operating such extracorporeal blood heating and cooling systems are also disclosed.

System for peritoneal dialysis and extracorporeal blood treatments

A dialysis system is configured to enable a patient to undergo both peritoneal dialysis and extracorporeal blood treatments. The example dialysis system includes a base unit configurable to provide a first fluid for use in preforming at least one peritoneal dialysis treatment at a first time. The base unit is further configurable to provide a second, different fluid for use in at least one extracorporeal blood treatment at a second, different time. The example dialysis system also includes a blood treatment unit configured to be docked to the base unit. The blood treatment unit includes a blood pump configured to pump blood from the patient to a blood filter and from the blood filter back to the patient. The blood filter or a blood line in communication with the blood filter receives the second fluid from the base unit for use in the at least one extracorporeal blood treatment.

A method of cleaning used dialysis fluid having urea to produce a cleaned dialysis fluid, the method including passing the used dialysis fluid having urea through a combination electrodialysis and urea oxidation cell, the cell including (i) a first set of electrodes for separation of the used dialysis fluid having urea into an acid stream and a basic stream, wherein the first set of electrodes includes an anode and a cathode; (ii) one or more second set of electrodes positioned to contact the basic stream with an electrocatalytic surface for decomposition of urea via electrooxidation, wherein the one or more second set of electrodes includes an anode and a cathode; and (iii) at least one power source to provide the first and second sets of electrodes with an electrical charge to activate the electrocatalytic surface.

Also an use of the centrally controlled multi-patient dialysis treatment system (1) for one or more patients' dialysis treatments is disclosed herein. For the centrally controlled multi-patient dialysis treatment system, in contrast to the conventional in-center dialysis infrastructures, in addition to cost saving, it is highly space efficient. Moreover, the centrally controlled multi-patient dialysis treatment system is robust and easy to setup.

The invention relates to fluid flow paths and fluid connectors for use with detachable containers that can be seated in an infusate caddy for use in a dialysis machine. The detachable containers can contain infusates or other solutes or materials such as disinfectants or cleaners, and can be conveniently seated in the infusate caddy. The detachable containers can be removed from the infusate caddy for restocking, cleaning, or resupply, as needed. The infusate caddy can be positioned or seated in a receiving compartment of a dialysis machine, and can also be removed, as needed. The fluid path and fluid connectors of the present invention provide the required fluid fittings, valve arrangements, pumps, and paddle assemblies for using the infusate caddy.
