Systems and methods for evaluating blood behavior when flowing through implantable medical devices
Systems and methods for evaluating blood behavior when flowing through an implantable medical device are provided. A flow loop includes the implantable medical device, and a blood reservoir configured to contain a volume of blood and to supply blood from the volume of blood to the implantable medical device. The flow loop further includes a plurality of tubing sections coupled in flow communication between the implantable medical device and the blood reservoir, the plurality of tubing sections including a least a first tubing section having a first diameter and a second tubing section having a second diameter, wherein the second diameter is smaller than the first diameter, and a flow diverter coupled in flow communication between the plurality of tubing sections and the blood reservoir, the flow diverter comprising an outlet that is configured to be positioned below a surface of the volume of blood.
Control Of Fluid Flow During Priming Of A Fluid Flow Circuit
A fluid processing system includes a fluid processing device and a fluid flow circuit. The device includes a pump configured to convey a priming fluid through the circuit. The pressure in a conduit of the circuit is measured while the pump is operated at a particular rate. When the magnitude of the pressure is less than the magnitude of a predetermined pressure at the end of a time interval, the pump is operated at an increased rate. When the magnitude of the pressure is greater than the magnitude of the predetermined pressure at the end of the time interval, the pump is instead operated at a decreased rate. The magnitude of the pressure in the conduit is again compared to the magnitude of the predetermined pressure after the pump has operated at the increased or decreased rate for the time interval to determine how to next adjust the operational rate.

Catheter for Portable Lung Assist Device
The present invention relates to a catheter that minimizes or eliminates the recirculation of oxygenated blood. The catheter of the present invention can be used to drain blood from multiple points in the patient, namely the superior vena cava, right atrium, and the right ventricle, while returning blood to the patient's pulmonary artery. Further, the catheter of the present invention is less likely to be moved or dislodged than catheters currently available in the art, thus making the catheter particularly useful for portable lung assist devices. The present invention also relates to methods for inserting the catheter into the patient and using the catheter with a lung assist device.

TREE-BASED DATA EXPLORATION AND DATA-DRIVEN PROTOCOL
A method for providing a treatment recommendation to a physician for treating a patient is disclosed. The method comprises determining, from a processor in communication with a patient data repository, a first treatment recommendation based on a combination of selected patient demographics from the patient data repository applicable to the patient, and operational parameters of a plurality of ventricular assist devices (VADs) suitable for treating the patient, the first treatment recommendation having a first survival rate and comprising the use of a first VAD. The method then obtains a first signal from using the first VAD on the patient. The method then determines a second treatment recommendation based on the first signal and the first treatment recommendation, the second treatment recommendation having a second survival rate. The method then provides the second treatment recommendation to the physician if the second survival rate is higher than the first survival rate.

METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR IDENTIFYING DISRUPTION OF A FLUID CONNECTION BETWEEN AN EXTRACORPOREAL CIRCUIT AND A PATIENT CIRCULATORY SYSTEM
A system and method for identifying a disruption of a flow from an extracorporeal circuit to a patient circulatory system is based on flow rate data, such as from a venous line of the extracorporeal circuit. A patient contribution to the flow rate data is identified and monitored to assess a disruption of the extracorporeal circuit and the patient circulatory system, or access device. A spectrum analysis can be performed on the flow rate data to identify a harmonic corresponding to the patient contribution, wherein a change in or disappearance of the identified harmonic can be used to identify a disruption of the flow.
