The apparatus includes a first jaw rotatably connected to a second jaw. The first and second jaws have first and second plates, respectively, to engage the tangled hair. The first and second plates include ridges, that also define grooves, to increase the surface area of the plates. The first and second jaws can be rotated between an open position to receive hair strands and a closed position to immobilize hair strands. The ridges on the first jaw are offset from those on the second jaw so that, in the closed position, the ridges on the first jaw are received in the grooves of the second jaw and the ridges on the second jaw are received in the grooves of the first jaw.
