Energy-based surgical instrument having multiple operational configurations
A surgical instrument includes an end effector and an actuator coupled to the end effector such that actuation of the actuator along a portion of an actuation path manipulates the end effector. A first activation button is electrically coupled to the end effector and is in-line with the actuation path. A first latch component is in-line with the actuation path; a selector is operably coupled to the actuator and movable between a first position and a second position. In the first position, a portion of the selector is positioned to activate the first activation button upon movement of the actuator along a portion of the actuation path to thereby supply energy to the end effector. In the second position, a second latch component of the selector is positioned to engage the first latch component to latch the actuator upon movement of the actuator along a portion of the actuation path.
Electrosurgical device with disposable shaft having rack and pinion drive
An apparatus comprises an end effector, a shaft assembly, and an interface assembly. The end effector is coupled with the shaft assembly. The shaft assembly comprises a translating member extending through the shaft assembly. The interface assembly is operable to engage the shaft assembly and comprises a plurality of drive shafts and a rack. One of the drive shafts is operable to drive the rack along a path that is parallel to the longitudinal axis of the shaft assembly. A plurality of racks may be used to rotate the shaft assembly, articulate the shaft assembly, and/or drive the translating member through the shaft assembly to thereby actuate the end effector.
Surgical device
A surgical device is provided that includes a jaw portion with a first jaw and a second jaw moveable relative to the first jaw. The surgical device also includes a shaft portion coupled to a proximal end of the jaw portion. A driver is configured to cause relative movement of the jaw portion and the shaft portion. The driver may be configured to cause the jaw portion to pivot relative to the shaft portion about a pivot axis that is perpendicular to first and second longitudinal axes defined by the jaw portion and the shaft portion, respectively. The driver may also be configured to cause at least a portion of the jaw portion to rotate relative to the shaft portion about the first longitudinal axis. Advantageously, the surgical device includes a surgical member, e.g., a cutting element and/or a stapling element, disposed within the first jaw.
Surgical cutting and fastening instrument with apparatus for determining cartridge and firing motion status
In various embodiments, a fastener cartridge is disclosed. The fastener cartridge comprises a cartridge body comprising a plurality of fasteners, a longitudinal knife slot defined in the cartridge body, and a circuit comprising a plurality of frangible resistors extending across the longitudinal knife slot. The plurality of frangible resistors comprises a first resistor and a second resistor, wherein the circuit comprises a first resistance when the first resistor and the second resistor are intact, wherein the circuit comprises a second resistance when the first resistor is split and the second resistor is intact, and wherein the second resistance is different than the first resistance.
End tool for surgical instrument and method of manufacturing the same
Provided are an end tool of a surgical instrument and a method of manufacturing the same, and more particularly, an end tool of a surgical instrument that may be manually operated to be used in laparoscopic surgery or other various surgery and a method of manufacturing the end tool, wherein a load applied to a pin (rotary shaft) and the pulley is appropriately distributed such that the pulley may be sufficiently rotated and at the same time, an overall durability may be improved.
ADAPTER, EXTENSION, AND CONNECTOR ASSEMBLIES FOR SURGICAL DEVICES
An adapter assembly for operably connecting an end effector to a surgical instrument. The adapter assembly includes a first proximal shaft, a second proximal shaft, a first distal shaft, and a second distal shaft. The first proximal shaft includes a first gear assembly. The second proximal shaft defines a longitudinal axis and includes a second gear assembly. The first distal shaft is disposed along the longitudinal axis and includes a third gear assembly. The first gear assembly is mechanically engaged with the third gear assembly. The second distal shaft includes a fourth gear assembly. The second gear assembly is mechanically engaged with the fourth gear assembly. A distal portion of the second distal shaft is disposed at least partially within an internal cavity of the third gear assembly.
SURGICAL INSTRUMENTS WITH DIFFERENTIAL ARTICULATION JOINT ARRANGEMENTS FOR ACCOMMODATING FLEXIBLE ACTUATORS
Surgical instruments that include an articulation joint that is a configured to establish an upper pathway and a lower pathway through the articulation joint. The upper pathway and the lower pathway are parallel to each other when the surgical instrument is in an unarticulated position and the upper pathway and the lower pathway are concentric to each other when the surgical instrument is articulated. An upper flexible firing assembly slidably extends through the upper pathway and a lower flexible firing assembly slidably extends through the lower pathway. The upper and lower flexible firing assemblies interface with a firing member and a differential drive assembly configured to apply axial drive motions to the upper flexible firing assembly and the lower flexible firing assembly.
ULTRASONIC TREATMENT INSTRUMENT
An ultrasonic treatment instrument includes a vibration transmitting member transmitting ultrasonic vibration toward a first gripper and formed as one piece, and a second gripper movable between a spaced position where the second gripper is spaced apart from the first gripper and a closed position where the second gripper is put in close to the first gripper. The ultrasonic treatment instrument includes an interlocking actuator increasing, by moving the first gripper in interlock with a movement of the second gripper to the spaced position, a spacing distance between the first gripper and the second gripper in accordance with a movement of the first gripper.
Surgical instrument with two-stage actuation gear mechanism
An instrument including an actuation gear mechanism that provides two functions of a tool. The actuation gear mechanism comprises a cam mechanism and a gear segment mechanism. The circumference of the cam disk of the cam mechanism—in a first section (α1)—is a spiral curve for generating a stroke for closing the forceps tool, while the circumference of the cam disk—in a second, adjoining, angular range (α2)—is circular. When the cam disk with the circular curved line biases the spring means, no further movement takes place on the output of the cam mechanism. Preferably, two congruent cam disks are provided, whereby these—together with the driving gear and the segment gear, as well as the shaft—form a one-piece plastic injection-molded part. The installation space between the cam disks can be utilized for a slide with a gear rack for shifting the knife.
Forceps jaw flanges
Forceps can include a drive pin, an outer tube, a first jaw, a second jaw, and an inner shaft. The outer tube can extend along a longitudinal axis. The first jaw can be pivotably connected to the outer tube. The first jaw can include a first flange that can be located at a proximal portion of the first jaw. The first flange can include a first chamfered edge configured to limit extension of the first flange laterally beyond an outer surface of the outer tube when the first jaw is in a closed position. The inner shaft can be located within the outer tube and can extend along the longitudinal axis.
