Surgical instrument with increased actuation force

A surgical instrument with improved end-effector gripping force. The instrument comprises a shaft, which may be inserted into a body of a patient. The articulated end-effector is mounted on the distal extremity of the instrument shaft and comprises a plurality of links interconnected by a plurality of joints, whose movements are remotely actuated by the surgeon's hands. This remote actuation is accomplished through mechanical transmission, mainly along flexible elements, which are able to deliver motion from a set of actuation elements, placed at a proximal extremity of the shaft, to the instrument's articulated end-effector. The articulated end-effector further comprises one or more cam-and-follower mechanisms that are able to amplify the force transmitted by the flexible elements so that the actuation force at the instrument jaws is maximized and the tension on the transmission elements minimized, thus increasing the fatigue resistance and life of the instrument.

Surgical stapling end effector component with deformable tip having void

An instrument includes a body, a shaft, and an end effector in communication with the shaft. The end effector includes opposing jaws, a staple cartridge, and a placement tip located at a distal end of one of the jaws. The placement tip includes first and second legs extending distally from one of the jaws. A void extends completely through the placement tip and separates the first and second legs. A distal portion connects the first and second legs. The distal portion has a first cross-sectional height that is greater than a second cross-sectional height of the first and second legs. The placement tip may include a body portion formed between an outer perimeter and an inner perimeter. The inner perimeter is defined by a void extending through the placement tip. At least a distal end of the body portion is bent towards the opposing jaw.

A forceps includes a housing, an elongated shaft assembly, and a cam assembly. The housing includes a movable handle pivotally coupled to the housing. The elongated shaft assembly is coupled to the housing and extends distally to support jaw members at a distal end thereof. One or both of the jaw members is selectively moveable relative to the other jaw member between a spaced apart position for manipulating tissue and a closed position for compressing tissue therebetween. The cam assembly is supported in the housing and includes an eccentric cam cable and an eccentric cam. The eccentric cam cable is operably coupled to the movable handle and positioned to rotate the eccentric cam upon movement thereof, wherein rotation of the eccentric cam reduces an amount of force on the movable handle required to move the jaw members to the closed position to compress tissue disposed between the jaw members

SURGICAL INSTRUMENT WITH INCREASED LEVER STROKE

A surgical instrument includes a housing having an elongated shaft extending distally therefrom configured to support an end effector at a distal end thereof. A handle operably couples to a drive assembly and is moveable to actuate the end effector. The drive assembly includes: front and rear drive tubes, the rear drive tube including a front washer disposed at a distal end thereof, the front drive tube including a rear washer disposed at a proximal end thereof; a stopper slidably disposed atop the front tube, the stopper and the rear washer defining a dead space therebetween; and a spring operably associated with the stopper. Initial actuation of the handle moves the front and rear drive tubes to close the end effector to grasp tissue and, once closed, further movement of the handle moves the rear drive tube to slide the stopper to eliminate the dead space.

A surgical instrument having an end effector mounted on the end of an elongate shaft extending from a handle is described, the shaft and end effector being rotatable with respect to the housing, to allow different rotational orientations of the end effector to be attained without rotating the whole instrument. To provide for control over the degree of rotation, shaft rotation control elements are provided to give rotation or torsion control. The shaft rotation control elements may be located at several different longitudinal positions along the shaft. Alternatively, rotation control elements in the form of mutually co-operating stops may be provided elsewhere, such as in a rotatable shaft support member at the distal end of the handle. In other embodiments rotation control stops are provided on both elements, thus providing for effective rotation control, which has a high quality feel to the user.
