Instrument with multiple articulation locks
A method comprises providing an articulation tool including an articulation mechanism comprising a proximal link and a distal link, end effector, elongated shaft, rotating member, and an articulation lock comprising a first lock configured to prevent pivoting of the elongated shaft about a yaw axis, a second lock configured to prevent pivoting about a pitch axis, and an actuator to actuate both locks simultaneously. The method further comprises driving movement of the proximal link which causes corresponding movement of the distal link, adjusting the actuator between an unlocked configuration and a locked configuration in which the links and end effector are held in a fixed orientation with respect to the elongated shaft, and driving rotation of the rotating member which causes rotation of the elongated shaft while the links and end effector are held in the fixed orientation and rotation of the end effector about the end effector longitudinal axis.
Adapter assemblies for surgical devices
An adapter assembly for connecting an end effector to an actuation assembly includes a base member defining a plurality of notches spaced at least partially about a circumference of the base member, a handle supported on the base member and rotatable about a longitudinal axis of the base member, and a latch mechanism supported on the handle assembly and selectively engageable with the base member. The latch mechanism includes a button member and a locking member. The button member is movable between a first position in which the locking member is received within one of the plurality of notches to lock the handle relative to the base member, and a second position in which the locking member is spaced from the plurality of notches to unlock the handle relative to the base member.
Surgical instrument with contained dual helix actuator assembly
An apparatus comprises an end effector, an elongate shaft, and a handle assembly. The shaft includes an articulation section that is operable to deflect the end effector away from the longitudinal axis of the shaft. The handle assembly includes a rotary member positioned within an intermediate section of the handle assembly. The rotary member is rotatable about an axis that is parallel to the longitudinal axis of the shaft. The rotary member is operable to control the articulation section of the shaft. The rotary member may include opposing thread sections that simultaneously drive lead screws in opposite longitudinal directions, to thereby control the articulation section. The shaft may be rotatable relative to the handle assembly, and the apparatus may selectively lock or resist such rotation based on the articulation state of the articulation section.
HAND-HELD ELECTROMECHANICAL SURGICAL INSTRUMENTS
A handle assembly (12) of a hand-held surgical instrument (10) includes a handle housing (26), a motor (36), and a dual thread lead screw (46) operably coupled to the motor (36) and configured to move proximally and/or distally in response to an actuation of the motor (36). A first thread pitch of the lead screw (46) is suitable for effecting a closing of jaw members (20a, 20b) of an end effector (20), and a second thread pitch of the lead screw (46) is suitable for effecting a stapling function of the end effector (20).
ULTRASONIC TREATMENT INSTRUMENT
An ultrasonic treatment instrument includes a vibration transmitting member transmitting ultrasonic vibration toward a first gripper and formed as one piece, and a second gripper movable between a spaced position where the second gripper is spaced apart from the first gripper and a closed position where the second gripper is put in close to the first gripper. The ultrasonic treatment instrument includes an interlocking actuator increasing, by moving the first gripper in interlock with a movement of the second gripper to the spaced position, a spacing distance between the first gripper and the second gripper in accordance with a movement of the first gripper.
Combination ultrasonic and electrosurgical instrument having electrical circuits with shared return path
A surgical instrument includes a shaft, an ultrasonic transducer, a waveguide acoustically coupled with the ultrasonic transducer and extending distally through the shaft, and an end effector arranged at a distal end of the shaft. The end effector includes an ultrasonic blade acoustically coupled with the waveguide, a clamp arm movable relative to the ultrasonic blade for clamping tissue, and an RF electrode operable to seal tissue with RF energy. The ultrasonic transducer is operable to drive the waveguide and the ultrasonic blade with ultrasonic energy. The surgical instrument further includes an ultrasonic electrical circuit operable to energize the ultrasonic transducer, and an RF electrical circuit operable to deliver RF energy to the RF electrode. A return path of the ultrasonic electrical circuit and a return path of the RF electrical circuit pass through a shared electrically conductive element.
Apparatus for pitch and yaw rotation
The present invention is directed to a tool having a wrist mechanism that provides pitch and yaw rotation in such a way that the tool has no singularity in roll, pitch, and yaw. A positively positionable multi-disk wrist mechanism includes a plurality of disks or vertebrae stacked in series. Each vertebra is configured to rotate in pitch or in yaw with respect to each neighboring vertebra. Actuation cables are used to manipulate and control movement of the vertebrae. In specific embodiments, some of the cables are distal cables that extend from a proximal vertebra through one or more intermediate vertebrae to a distal vertebra, while the remaining cables are medial cables that extend from the proximal vertebra to one or more of the intermediate vertebrae. The cables are actuated by a pivoted plate cable actuator mechanism. In specific embodiments, the actuator mechanism includes a plurality of small radius holes or grooves for receiving the medial cables and a plurality of large radius holes or grooves for receiving the distal cables. The holes or grooves restrain the medial cables to a small radius of motion and the distal cables to a large radius of motion, so that the medial cables to the medial vertebra move only a fraction of the amount as the distal cables to the distal vertebra, so as to achieve precise control and manipulation of the vertebrae.
