09737332 · 2017-08-22 · ·

Two part laparoscopic tools and surgical methods using such tools are presented. The tools and methods enable use of multiple surgical tools each having wide tool heads to be used in a body cavity using a single wide trocar and one or more narrow incisions, thereby reducing surgical risk and enhancing patient comfort and shortening recovery time. Additional instruments for facilitating laparoscopic surgery are also presented.

An end effector of a surgical tool may include a housing, a jaw support shaft, jaw members, an articulation member, and cam pulleys. The jaw members may be supported on the support shaft and may be pivotable about a pivot axis. The articulation member may have a slot and include articulation pins extending from it that are coupled to the jaw members. The slot may be adapted to receive the jaw support shaft to support the articulation member between the jaw members. The articulation member may be rotatable about the jaw support shaft to articulate the jaw members relative to the longitudinal axis. The cam pulleys may be mounted to the housing and coupled to the jaw members. The cam pulleys may be rotatable about the pivot axis to pivot the pair of jaw members between open and closed conditions.

Laparoscopic forceps instrument

The forceps instrument includes a central pull-push member formed by transmission and actuating elements. The central push-pull member opens and closes the branches, and also acts as a tissue abutment that is variable based on the degree of closure of the branches. The variable tissue abutment may be configured as a slider element and is adjustable proportionally to the opening angle of the branches. When grasped, the vessels are brought proximally. The tissue abutment acts as a spacer between the hinge region and the grasped material. While the branches are being closed, the vessel is held stationary and compressed. During compression, expansion of the vessel occurs axially in distal and proximal directions. Due to the receding of the variable tissue abutment during the closing operation, room is created for the grasped material to escape. Tissue accumulations can thus be restricted and overstressing of the tissue can be counteracted.

SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR DESIGNING PIN JOINT
20170235851 · 2017-08-17 · ·

A computer-implemented method for designing a pin joint having a bearing member and a pin member received within the bearing member is provided. The method includes receiving, via a Graphical User Interface (GUI), at least one input related to one or more pin joint configuration parameters. The method includes receiving, via the GUI, at least one input related to one or more pin member design parameters. The method includes receiving, via the GUI, at least one input related to one or more bearing member design parameters. The method includes calculating a set of design parameters of the pin joint based on the inputs related to the pin joint configuration parameters, the pin member design parameters, and the bearing member design parameters. The method includes generating an output design of the pin joint based on the comparison between the calculated set of design parameters with a set of predefined design parameters.

DEVELOPABLE AND COLLAPSABLE EXTERNAL CUTTING OR GRIPPING MECHANISM

A hollow rod developable actuator tool including a cylinder defining the outer circumference of the hollow rod, a first tool mechanism, and a second tool mechanism. The hollow rod developable actuator tool transitions from a first closed state wherein the first tool mechanism and second tool mechanism are contained entirely within the outer circumference of the hollow rod to a second open state wherein the first tool mechanism and second tool mechanism extent outside the outer circumference of the hollow rod.

DEVELOPABLE AND COLLAPSABLE SHAFT DEPLOYMENT MECHANISM

A hollow rod developable actuator tool including a first link comprising an outer cylinder, a deployment ring including second link comprising a first portion pivotably connected to the first link at a first joint mounted in a first cavity in the wall of the outer cylinder and a third link comprising a second tool portion pivotably connected to the first portion at a second link, and a fourth link comprising an inner cylinder to which the second portion of the deployment ring is also pivotably connected at a third link mounted in a second cavity in the wall of the inner cylinder. When the inner cylinder of the fourth link is rotated in relation to the outer cylinder of the first link the actuator tool transitions from a first state where the deployment ring is stowed within the tool to a second state where the deployment ring is deployed externally.

Deployment mechanisms for surgical instruments
09724153 · 2017-08-08 · ·

A deployment mechanism for selectively deploying and retracting an energizable member and/an insulative member relative to an end effector assembly of a surgical instrument includes one or more actuators, a clutch assembly, and a drive assembly. The clutch assembly is configured to couple to the actuator(s) to provide rotational motion in the first direction in response to such rotation of the actuator(s) and to decouple from the actuator(s) in response to rotation thereof in the second direction. The drive assembly is operably coupled to the clutch assembly and is configured to convert the rotational motion provided by the clutch assembly into longitudinal motion to translate the energizable member and/or insulative member from a storage position to a deployed position and to translate the energizable member and/or the insulative member from the deployed position back to the storage position.
