An external fixation strut and corresponding systems and methods of use with a bone alignment device are disclosed. The external fixation strut may provide an enhanced range of adjustable lengths and may be connected to a bone alignment device, thereby enabling the bone alignment device to be used over a larger workable range. As a result, comfort of a patient may be improved as the need to switch out the external fixation strut may be prevented. The external fixation strut may also include a single measurement scale that may be easily viewed and used to adjust the length of the external fixation strut, thereby ensuring more accurate length adjustments.

Orthopaedic External Fixation System with Removable Rails or Skates

An improved orthopaedic external fixation system with removable rails or skates and may include: at least a distal foot fixation element; at least a pair of rails or skates removably connected to the foot fixation element; at least a load sensor associated to at least one of the rails or skates; an electronic apparatus coupled to the load sensor and receiving an electric signal from the load sensor; an electronic controller coupled to the apparatus and issuing at least a flag signal upon detection of a threshold pressure force on said at least one of said rails or skates. This electronic controller may be mounted on the orthopaedic system or may be a structurally independent host device including a controller that is in signal communication with the load sensors.

Controller Module for Strut Adjustment

An external fixation system may include first and second fixation rings and a plurality of adjustable length struts. Each adjustable length strut may have two joints, a rod, a tube, and an actuator configured to drive the rod axially relative to the tube to change an effective length of the strut. The system may include a plurality of controller modules each configured to couple to a corresponding strut. The external fixation system may have a manual mode of operation in which the controller modules are not coupled to the struts, and manual actuation the actuators changes the effective lengths of the struts in discrete length increments. The external fixation may have an automated mode of operation in which the controller modules are coupled to the struts, and automated actuation of the actuators changes the effective lengths of the struts in infinitesimally small length increments.
