Intramedullary nail with wire or magnet for targeting of a bone-anchor locking hole

In one embodiment, an intramedullary nail has a body that includes proximal and distal ends and an inner surface that defines at least one locking hole that extends into an outer surface of the body so as to receive a bone anchor to lock the nail in a medullary canal of a bone. The body has a first biocompatible material that defines at least a portion of the outer surface. The nail has a second material that is different from, and at least partially encapsulated in, the first material. The second material can produce at least one of an electrical current and a magnetic field, and is supported by the nail body such that a position of the at least one bone-anchor locking hole can be detected based on the at least one of the electrical current and the magnetic field.

A compressive intramedullary rod includes first and second concentric shafts configured to engage with each other in a telescopic manner along a longitudinal axis, through a screw mechanism integrated in the first concentric shaft. The screw mechanism includes a bolt in an upper portion for mounting onto the first concentric shaft, and an externally threaded rod in a lower portion for engaging with an internally threaded first channel of the second concentric shaft. The second concentric shaft includes a second channel extending along corresponding length, and the externally threaded rod portion includes a third channel extending along corresponding length. Further, the second channel fully aligns with the third channel, when first and second concentric shafts engage in a telescopic manner upon rotation of the screw mechanism. The first and second concentric shafts include first and second set of guide holes for coupling to proximal and distal fragments of bone.

In one embodiment, an intramedullary nail has a proximal end and a distal end that are offset from one another along a distal direction. The nail has an outer surface and an inner surface. The inner surface defines a cannulation that extends into the proximal end towards the distal end. The nail defines a bone-anchor fixation hole that extends into the outer surface and entirely through the nail. The nail also defines a receptacle that is proximate to the bone-anchor fixation hole and open to the cannulation such that the receptacle is configured to receive a locator of a targeting system therein from the cannulation, where the locator includes at least one of a sensor and a field generator. The receptacle is at least partially defined by a stop that limits an insertion depth of the locator within the nail along the distal direction.

The present disclosure provides an orthopedic implant that can include an intramedullary stem transition region that fits in the bony intramedullary canal. The transition region can run as a monolithic piece between the implant body and the intramedullary stem, with a squared cross-section away from the implant body and a circular cross-section close to the stem body. The transition region can allow for higher implant strength with reduced rotation for the implant.
