Implant for Bone Fixation
An implant for bone fixation is presented. The implant comprises an elongated member configured to be wound around bone parts that are to be fixed. Further, an engagement feature is provided that is coupled to the elongated member and configured to engage a portion of the elongated member so as to secure the implant in a loop around the bone parts. A fastening member is arranged between and coupled to the elongated member and the engagement member. The fastening member comprises at least one opening for receiving a bone fastener. In one variant, at least one visual indicator indicating a region of the fastening member to be severed in order to detach the implant is provided. In another variant, at least one of the engagement member and the elongated member are coupled to the fastening member by injection molding.
Sternal Closure Device with Dual Locking Mechanism
A sternal closure device includes an insertion member, a receiver member and a joint locking mechanism. The joint locking mechanism includes a dual pawl assembly and a dual ratchet assembly. The dual pawl assembly includes a pair of pawl arms that include heads with outward facing teeth. The dual ratchet assembly includes a pair of ratchet arms with inward facing teeth that are configured for an intermeshed engagement with the teeth on the corresponding pawl arms. Alignment tabs on the ratchet arms are captured within guide channels on the receiver member. The configuration and number of the teeth contribute to the strength of the device. The locking mechanism contributes to efficiency, speed, and strength of the closure.
Method for fusion of fractured or voided sternum post sternotomy
Disclosed herein are improved surgical techniques for repairing bone defects in a sternum during a sternotomy procedure and implants adapted for such techniques. In an exemplary embodiment, provided is a fusion strip made of an osteoconductive material and of a dimension that is especially adapted for improved repair of sternal bone defects.
MEDICAL FIXATION MECHANISMS, SYSTEMS, AND METHODS
A fixation mechanism that more effectively limits or prevents relative movement between two adjacent objects includes an elongated tie having a free end and a joined end and a clasp coupled to the joined end of the tie. The clasp includes a housing having an insertion channel in which the free end of the tie is inserted and an exit channel through which the tie exits such that the tie and clasp form a loop that connects the two adjacent objects. The clasp further includes a locking mechanism positioned in the housing between the insertion channel and the exit channel. The locking mechanism includes a locking tine that permits the free end of the tine to pass forwardly through the insertion channel and out the exit channel but grips the tie to prevent it from moving rearwardly out of the housing.
Sternum fixation devices and methods
A sternum fixation device includes a plate having a first end and a second end, a right lateral edge and a left lateral edge, an inner side configured for placement against the sternum, and an outer side. A first lobe includes a band socket defined as a blind recess in the outer side of the plate. The band socket includes a right lateral stop and a left lateral stop opposite the right lateral stop. A right lateral channel is defined in the first lobe from the right lateral edge to the band socket, the right lateral channel defined above a right side floor in the socket. A left lateral channel opposite the right lateral channel is defined in the first lobe from the left lateral edge to the band socket, the left lateral channel defined above a left floor in the socket.
Sternal plates and methods of use
A plate system for securing a first sternal portion and a second sternal portion of a separated sternum can include a first plate and a second plate. The first plate can include a first body and a first hook. The first body can include a first reduction bore. The first hook can extend from the first body. The first hook can be engageable with a lateral portion of the first sternal portion. The second plate can include a second body and a second hook. The second body can include a second reduction bore. The second hook can extend from the second body. The second hook can be engageable with a lateral portion of the second sternal portion opposite the first hook.
STERNUM FIXATION DEVICE AND METHOD
A system for compressing a plate against a surface of a bone is provided. The system includes a fastener and a plate having a body. The body has a first and second longitudinal side that are substantially parallel to each other. The plate defines first slots proximal to the first longitudinal side, and the plate defines second slots proximal to the second longitudinal side. Each slot of the first slots is situated generally opposite a corresponding slot of the second slots. The body is contoured to lie passively against the bone. Further, each of the first slots is configured to receive a fastener, each of the second slots is configured to receive the fastener after the fastener has been looped around the bone, and pulling on an end of the fastener through a respective slot of the second slots tensions the fastener to compress the plate around the bone.
STERNUM FIXATION DEVICE AND METHOD
