Adjustment of a surgical device function based on situational awareness
Surgical devices and surgical systems are disclosed. The surgical device can comprise an actuator and a control circuit configured to adjust one or more functions of the surgical device based on a signal from a situationally-aware surgical hub. A surgical system can comprise a screen and a control circuit configured to communicate a priority level of a recommendation to the clinician on the display.
Determining tissue composition via an ultrasonic system
Various systems and methods for determining the composition of tissue via an ultrasonic surgical instrument are disclosed. A control circuit can be configured to monitor the change in resonant frequency of an ultrasonic electromechanical system of the ultrasonic surgical instrument as the ultrasonic blade oscillates against a tissue and determine the composition of the tissue accordingly. In some aspects, the control circuit can be configured to modify the operation of the ultrasonic electromechanical system or other operational parameters of the ultrasonic surgical instrument according to the detected tissue composition.
ELECTROSURGICAL SYSTEM FOR PREVENTING REUSE OF INSTRUMENTS
An electrosurgical generator configured to generate electrical energy to be applied to biological tissue via electrical communication with an electrosurgical instrument, the electrosurgical generator including a power source configured to activate to output the electrical energy to the electrosurgical instrument, a measurement circuit configured to measure a resistive value associated with an erodible coating deposited on a portion of the electrosurgical instrument, and a control circuit configured to compare a measured resistive value of the erodible coating to a threshold resistive value of the coating, and control activation of the power source based on the comparison between the measured resistive value and the threshold resistive value.
METHOD FOR TREATING CHRONIC RHINITIS
A method for treating patients who suffer from chronic rhinitis that is efficient and causes fewer adverse effects than known methods. This is achieved by using a handheld surgical instrument, more particularly an electrosurgical applicator, for treatment of hypertrophic nasal conchae and/or for submucosal treatment of the posterior nasal nerve (PNN) in order to reduce at least one cardinal symptom of chronic rhinitis.
Colpotomy cup assembly
A medical device for performing a hysterectomy is provided. The medical device has a tissue incision assembly that includes a first cup nested within a second cup. The tissue incision assembly also includes a spacer assembly between the first cup and the second cup in order to maintain a spacing between the first and second cups. The tissue incision assembly also has a cutting implement that has a portion extending between, and movable with respect to, the first and second cups. The cutting implement can provide a circular cut guided via the spacing between the first and second cups.
User interface and lock features for positioning multiple components within a body
Disclosed embodiments include apparatuses, systems, and methods for positioning electrodes within a body. In an illustrative embodiment, an apparatus for slidably moving multiple features relative to a sheath insertable into a body and positionable relative to a reference point includes a primary actuator configured to move a primary electrode to a first position. A secondary actuator is configured to move a secondary electrode to a second position. A shrouding device is configured to selectively prevent access to the secondary actuator until the primary actuator has been manipulated to extend the primary electrode to the first position.
ENERGY ACTIVATION SWITCH FOR VESSEL SEALER
An endoscopic surgical forceps includes a housing having a shaft extending therefrom with an end effector operably coupled thereto. The end effector includes first and second jaw members movable relative to one another between open and closed positions. A first handle is pivotably coupled to the housing and is movable relative to a second handle disposed on the housing, the first handle configured to actuate the jaw members between the open and closed positions upon movement thereof relative to the second handle. A trigger is operably coupled to the housing and is configured to deploy a knife between the first and second jaw members upon actuation thereof. An energy activation switch is coupled to an electrosurgical energy source such that activation thereof supplies energy to the first and second jaw members, the energy activation switch is disposed on the trigger.
SURGICAL INSTRUMENT COMPRISING A ROTATION-DRIVEN AND TRANSLATION-DRIVEN TISSUE CUTTING KNIFE
A surgical instrument comprising a rotatable and translatable firing member is disclosed.
SURGICAL INSTRUMENT COMPRISING INDEPENDENTLY ACTIVATABLE SEGMENTED ELECTRODES
Disclosed is a surgical instrument comprising an end effector with independently activatable segmented electrodes.
ELECTROSURGICAL ADAPTATION TECHNIQUES OF ENERGY MODALITY FOR COMBINATION ELECTROSURGICAL INSTRUMENTS BASED ON SHORTING OR TISSUE IMPEDANCE IRREGULARITY
Disclosed is a method of adapting energy modality due to a short circuit or tissue type grasped in the jaws of an end effector of a surgical instrument. The method includes selecting an electrode in an array of segmented electrodes during a pre-energy activation cycle. The method includes applying a sub-therapeutic electrical signal to the selected electrode to differentiate between a shorted electrode and low impedance tissue grasped in the jaws of the end effector. The method includes determining the selected electrode is shorted based on a measured electrical parameter received by the control circuit after applying the sub-therapeutic electrical signal and blending monopolar and bipolar RF energy. The method includes determining that the selected electrode is shorted and switching output energy of the RF generator between monopolar and bipolar RF energy.
